Which begs the question, mentioned in the forums (fora?) for other airlines that are already doing this, will people who must involuntarily check bags at the gate because of lack of overhead space be forced to pay the $15? If so, angry people who lose "overhead bin roulette". If not, it seems like everyone will try to bring all their luggage on board to avoid the bag check fee.

No fees to be charged at the gates if the aircraft overheads are full.
We are being asked to look at the size and quantity of bags as you board the flight and deal with them at that time. I don't think too many boarding agents will take the time to charge you for the oversize or extra bags but we might be tagging those before you enter the jetway.

That's what I have done in the past--actually, aside from one recent event in Switzerland, it's been well over eight years since I have had to do it--as the bag isn't oversized and the agent is keen to get the flight off on time, so I have always gotten to bring it on board.

Interesting point, and not to be sarcastic about it, but I'm wondering if you or anyone else expected otherwise. UA brought CO into *A, so I'm willing to hazard a guess that there was language in the deal that covers FF program streamlining. One program can't head and shoulders stick out as better than the rest, as it will put the other members of the alliance at a clear disadvantage.

Now what-on-earth incentive do I have to go ahead and and do more trips to get Plat?
I guess the only benefit to me to being a Platinum will be to avoid paying change fees as a Gold on reward tickets (of which $150 is also retarded). From experience, the only way to even a standard reward is to book one anyway and change the dates as it gets closer to departure. I've sometimes changed a reservation maybe half a dozen times, or more. Even changing the city pairs, or changing as F becomes available, etc. That would be impossible to do as a Gold, now. Why even bother?

Hi there CO Insider,
I am surprised that it took so long to introduce the first checked bag fee. Good for Continental.
I have always wondered why CO had that 500 mile minimum. It's good to see it gone.
Why are Platinum and Gold Elites at the same bonus level? I don't get the sense of that one.
Thanks for the update.

hugh on 500 miles? only on the CO forum
Nearly every airline has the same bonus level for mid and top tier. CO was unique in giving an extra bump.

Nice of CO to make this announcement on a Friday afternoon. Maybe on a weekend they thought we'd be slow to "notice"...

So, CO Insider... Are you guys finally going to show actual miles on your PDF timetable instead of "500 miles" for the shorthaul routes?

Hi CopperSteve, the ability to first bag fee exemption to the EliteAccess customer (e.g. Elite or Presidential Plus cardmember) and any travel companions in the same reservation (excluding groups of 10 or more). The one exception is when your travel companions get divided out of your reservation (for example, to process your Elite upgrade). In these cases, we'll still allow the exemption.
Thanks for at least some good news!

Will they take the time to run through the paperwork if I ask to declare excess valuation?

Which is one reason I'm copying it here.
- First Checked Bag Fee. For travel within the U.S. and between the U.S. and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada, customers will be charged $15 for the first checked bag. This fee will apply to tickets issued effective today, Sep. 5, 2008 for travel on or after Oct. 7, 2008. OnePass Elite members, SkyTeam Elite members, anyone else eligible for EliteAccess (including full-fare Y class and Chase Presidential Plus cardmembers), and active military personnel traveling on orders will be exempt.

Continental's ads were always neat because they promoted the "we're different" from other airlines approach. Now, the ads will have to change to "we're the same". It's sad, and I can't even drown my sorrows in a glass of ice cream anymore.

Probably because everyone was celebrating in Las Vegas in August. I can totally picture the band playing upbeat music on the Titanic.

Someone did ask the question about the first bag fee at the OP Q/A session in LAS and the response from Compton was words to the effect:
We don't particularly want to implement it. However we're still studying it and if we find it does not influence customers decisions - and our competitors keep it - we'd be pressured into to remain competitive on our revenue side.
(that's what I recall, please feel free to correct me if I left something out or misrepresented what was said)

I dont know what the Plats are complaining about. A measly 25% reduction in bonus miles ?
Gold and Silver have been the most severely affected. $150 award redeposit or award ticket change fees is the biggest increase in fees of all the things they have changed. For Gold and Silvers, it becomes difficult to book tickets 4 months in advance, since your dates could change.

I think folks are getting a little too excited here.
The first baggage fee is in line with other major carriers - AA and UA. CO needs to charge it to be competitive. $30 roundtrip is significant.
The 500 min. only applies to EQM. CO currently only gives bonus miles based on the actual miles. Maybe some with lots of less than 500 min. flights can earn it on points. Remember if you are buying expensive Y tickets you get 2 points for that segment.
Yes - I hate to see the loss of 25% - but others AA and UA only give 100% to top tiers. But the real catcher here is that the others offer SWU - and CO Insider has indicated that CO does not play to offer.
I think CO's plan to align with UA - but then not offer SWU is the biggest hit here.
