Kind of expected this with all the alignment with CO. I just may be exclusive with UA next year as I know I'll at least have E+ seating if the upgrade does not go through (assuming no shenagaii ;)) and not have to deal with CO Y.

Fixed it...:D

Wow it looks like CO has made their moves to match with UA and UA is making their own moved now, wonder if CO makes a SWU announcement starting at the same time UA moves to free upgrades just to finish it off.

My far-reaching wish would be for CO to implement E+....very far-reaching.

I admit that I have not been paying much attention to the other side of the equation, but "alignment with CO"?

Has UA been doing more to align with CO than this? I thought CO was the one shifting a bunch of stuff around so as to play nice with UA and Star.

1Ps and 2Ps don't seem too happy about the change. If this portends reciprocal upgrades with CO in the future, that's definitely a plus. I would tailor my UA flying around Transcon coach fares that allow routing via leisure markets, when not outright booking Q-UPs.

changing the entire means of upgrade is a huge shift for them, and one I am surprised they make.

SWUs are more likely, IMO.

UA probably wanted to give its elites access to CO EUAs, as part of the marketing/operations alignment. CO probably said "not unless you give EUAs to our peeps." CO had all the leverage, in this regard.

With UA's much larger network and more flights, they can poach a lot more CO flyers with such an arrangement than CO could poach UA flyers. Assuming, of course, that the end-goal is reciprocity. :-:

well, maybe alignment may be too strong of a word at this point but IMO both sides are making significant changes to make the marriage work.

CO is shifting a lot. UA has to shift some, too. Remember that there are multiple levels of cooperation involved. There's the ATI/JV for TATL. And then there is the CO/UA relationship. CO and UA are going to become very cozy on domestic operations. The NW-CO relationship will be the model it is based on. And those two did a LOT of similar things.

Cert-based systems are more complicated and more expensive to administer. Switching to the EUA system is easier for the airlines to manage. The folks in the UA forum have also identified its shortcomings and I think that most of them are correct to be worried about it. But it is better for the more frequent customers and it is easier to implement. That's ignoring the pains of change, of course.
