I stayed in the El Paso HGI right after it opened in 2007 and it is quite nice.
Corpus Christi has one that opened a few months later in 2007 that's great too. If you're selective, you can also find Hamptons that are equally nice, often at a lower price, but it does take knowing what to look for to determine if it's going to be one of the awesome Hamptons, or one of the Awesome™ Hamptons. And trust me, both exist, often in the same market. One must chose wisely when it comes to Hampton. |

Everything I've ever seen on it said it was going to not be affiliated with a major hotel company, which I think is a mistake. Regardless, it will be good for Lubbock to have another full-service hotel. Of the three or four that fall into that category now, the Embassy Suites is the only one worth spending a dime on. The two downtown are both ancient and, if it wasn't for travelers who just don't know any better, would have ceased to exist decades ago.
I agree about the LBB downtown hotels. The only time I steped foot into the Holiday Inn was to use a dinner voucher from a CO flight knowing that the hotel was a redeemable location. I know, a little extreme to use my $10 or $12 meal voucher but got to take it when you can. The best use of an airline meal vouchers is when I used them to buy some ground coffee at the coffee place near the E PC at IAH and the time I bought snacks at a store in the B Gates and brought home 3 or 4 water bottles to get the full use of the vouchers. I am a Box Whore and a Voucher Whore. No meetings for me though! |
Just got a txt from realtor. Need to be outta the house for a showing this evening from 7:45 to 8:15 pm. I think I might just have to go to the wine bar! Must be outta towners? Seems a bit late in the evening to be looking at houses.

I will have to talk with those going over to Japan this coming month. My main trip is in July for 5 days. I have reservations at the airport hilton now. Thinking that would be the easiest point to move abotu the country on the bullet too. I need to work on that this week.

I spent two nights, and only two nights there, on one trip. That was two nights too many. I'll never forget complaining and having a manager come up to my room and tell me that there was nothing wrong with the fact that I had to kick my door as hard as I could to get it open because it was stuck, and that the shower was "clean" even though mildew was visible on about 25% of the tile grout, and the bathroom smelled moldy. Apparently he considered that smell to be "normal" for a clean bathroom. And this was after they "renovated" which it turns out was probably nothing more than new mattresses and comforters. And there were other issues too, but that's just the short version. Awful place. Truly awful. And a coworker of mine who is for some ridiculous reason an enormous fan of Priority Club always stayed there saying "It's not that bad, and they upgrade me to the top floor." Big deal. He would have probably been far better off at the Staybridge Suites across from the campus on 19th. Unfortunately the powers that be at Texas Tech seem to think the "nice" places in that city are that particular Holiday Inn, the La Quinta that's right in the middle of the construction on Brownfield Highway (although the freeway construction right there isn't so bad now), and the old Hampton. Nobody there seems to have noticed there are much newer, nicer hotels that offer rooms at the same state rate in town. Fortunately they never balked too much at me staying elsewhere once I figured out I could do it and get away with it. |

I prefer HGIs when possible but Hampton's are nice too. For me the tie breaker is the better free breakfast at HGI vs. HI. The HI pre-cooked specials are not that great. My parents stayed in the HGI in Monterey and while it is a nice property the rooms were a bit small. I can't complain though, I got the stay credits for them in exchange for my Gold HH benefits. I really want to stay with HH in Tokyo but not finding anything too reasonable. $200 or lees a night would be best but I know that is hard in Tokyo or any major city for that matter.
Agree about the new HI's vs. the older ones. The free internet at both HI and HGI's are a great thing. Nice, all this hotel talk and Marriott sends me an e-mail to vote for them in the Freddies. |

The Hilton at the airport is fine for an overnight layover. Otherwise it is bad for a trip to Japan. You're not on the lines for the bullet trains and you're an hour or more out from Tokyo. I may not know too much about Tokyo, but I know that the HH Narita is way out of the way.

What free breakfast at HGI? I've noticed HGI's can have two different beds in the same place. The better floors have better beds. I once got stuck a non-better floor which looked identical to the rooms I normally had on the property but the bed was not as nice.

As for free breakfast at HGIs, it does exist, if you're a Gold or Diamond HHonors member and select it as your VIP benefit. I never select it, as I can expense breakfast on work trips. The 750 point option is better. |

Edit: Or was free breakfast instead of the coupons for stuff at the little snack thingy behind the front desk? |
Come on CO! Match that WN sale! At the very least run that apparently-one-off $198 DCA-SLC rt through all of July. I don't want to fly into LAS then drive 6 hours with a 2yo...
