Or perhaps they promoted the TSA Staffer who made up that rule to some executive position, or made him/her head of FEMA.

Depends where you go. I had a nice, aimless drive through the New Mexican Desert back in September. It was quite fun.

I'm thinking about doing a similar NM desert drive in January. Either that or drink Guinness in DUB.

Yup. Absolutely true, too.

There were times when I'd lose a bag going in one direction, be re-united with it at the airport going home and just recheck it. I'd get back to NY and have no bag.

US and PHL were the biggest culprits, but DL, LH, and UA all put on a good showing that year.

Why did I check my bag you ask - at the time I was working on a project that required me to carry 2 laptops. And I was told by a TSA person that you couldn't bring both laptops into the cabin. I guess the rule has since been dropped.

That would really frustrate me

My worst experience was with DL going to CAE. A co-worker and I were on multiple delay flights and when we arrived at 1am our bags were gone. We were only going to be there for two days and ended up wearing the stuff we carried on (we had to check due to equipment we carried). I had luckily put an extra pair of underwear in my carry-on as well as my toothbrush.

I continually called DL for our bags and when we arrived at the airport for the return we were finally given a straight answer; Our bags were out for delivery.

The agent made a call to the driver and somehow, my bag made it on the flight and was waiting for me at DFW, my co-worker's showed up at 2am at his house several days later.

But for Las Cruces, I-25 is missable. I would head further East, focusing on White Sands & Carrizozo (Valley of Fires State Park), and the Mountains around there. Roswell is also an option (which I didn't make it to).

That I would do but my trip was to start in NJ w/ a car with 147,000 miles (mostly highway) and transmission #2 and go to who knows where. Never figure out where the who knows where was.

I best he's doing a heckuva job too.

The photos of your aimless NM roadtrip are pretty cool. Its one of those places I go to with a relatively high frequency that I always say I'm going to tack on a weekend and go exploring, but I never do. I generally fly in and out. Back when they had the EWR non-stops I'd do it all in one [exhausting] day.

So, my knowledge of the region is limited to a 3 mile radius around the ABQ airport (with limited excursions to Pappadeuxs) and about 8 hours spent in Santa Fe.

You know you're not taking advantage of your travels when the folks at the local Fuddruckers recognize you.

You know what - now's a good time to make a New Years resolution. This year, for every 10 days I travel I'm going to take at least 1 "me" day. (ha)

Was that the year US and in particular US @ PHL decided it was just easier to keep the luggage on the ground and not bother to load the planes?

Is Truth or Consequences not worth a stop? I'd be originating in ABQ so I was leaning towards a day up near Santa Fe and then a day either going South on I-25 or wandering East or West on I-40.

I would say it's worth it, but there is not much there. If you go a little outside of town there are some really pretty views, especially with the nearby lakes.

Aside from taking a photograph of a cool road-sign, it's pretty boring. I found Carrizozo to be far more scenic.

Most of the time I just laughed it off. I've become really adept and procuring needed provisions at 24 hour Wal-Marts and, if I'm lucky, Targets. Even when the airlines wouldn't reimburse me, the items would find their way on my expense report.

For a while I was McGyver-esque. No laptop charger? No problem. With 2 gum wrappers, a paper clip, pocket lint and a slice of bologna I could rig up a contraption that would charge my (s)t(h)inkPad*.

The worst was when I had to give a presentation to the board of management of a multi-billion dollar global company in an [obviously] borrowed suit. I nearly decked the LH agent when I got back to FRAport for the flight home and they told me my luggage arrived on the flight after mine, but their system was down so they didn't know where to deliver it. And through some weird non-customer service mentality, she tried to convinced me, that this was my fault.

I hate Luftwaffe.

*In reality I would just harass people until they let me borrow their charger.

German efficiency. I'm sure she received a raise.
