Yes, but you're an academic now. An expert, a guy whose name and title mean something, who can be dressed up and taken downtown. That's worth something, tangible and intangible.

Although my name and title mean something, the pay for my chosen avocation does not. ;) I brought home more when I was 23 (well, didn't bring home - put into investments) than I do now.

For what we pay our consultants I've actually approached my employer about changing over to consultant status. They have not yet warmed up to that idea.

Oh, please sir, spare us. And how many figures does that Dean's salary have in it? And at what ratio does your institution match your TIAA contributions? And how many hours per week do you have to be at the office or classroom?

Need I go on?

* Only five - and not really close to six - with a 12-month contract (as mentioned before, with summer pay faculty can almost make a dean's wage).
* Ten percent of salary plus $50 a month.
* During the summer, I have to be at the office five hours a week but doing my job requires closer to 25. During the fall / spring, I have to show up every day. The vast majority of work is done at home.

Hmm. Country code 234: Nigeria. Space is very limited at the UN, and office space very limited in NY in general, so they moved the processing to a lower cost location. Makes sense to me.

I'll be in Brazil tomorrow. Probably won't be posting much, if at all.

Okay, but in reality, academic employment does not entail the vow of poverty that many 135K plus overrides administrators, or 100K plus consulting tenured professors would have us believe, wouldn't you agree?

Outsourcing to Nigeria. Cheap labor. Does make sense.
