Just got my latest edition of Travel & Leisure, wherein best and worst US Airports are ranked.

Best:

  1. JFK - New Terminal 5, updated runway construction, T+L Store ()
  2. IAD - Underground AeroTrain is open, cutting time between terminals.
  3. ATL - 70 new retailers in various terminals, rotating art collections.
  4. SFO - Large concourses, aviation museum, BART service, lots of brand name stores

Worst:
  1. MIA - Under construction since 2004, only 73% of flights are on time, crappy signage, long walks between security and gates
  2. LAX - The 405, old terminals, no seating
  3. EWR - Worst delays at 66% of flights on time, overcrowded
  4. IAH - Long walk between customs and immigration, takes up to an hour to pick up bags

My thoughts:  Apparently this person hasn't used Terminals C or D at IAD, or tried to get to JFK at rush hour, or been delayed past 9PM at ATL, or tried to afford anything at Gucci SFO.

I agree that MIA and LAX are generally holes, though the international terminal at LAX isn't so bad. EWR is delayed, everyone knows this. But bag delays are not something that is commonly associated with IAH, and the walk from customs down to get your bag is shorter than the hop from C to E.

The judge of that contest must not have been to the same IAH and ATL I've been to.

Amen.

There's a huge difference between the speed of bags coming off at terminal C for domestic flights, and at terminal E for international. Bags come off at E lightning-quick. Bags at A & B generally come out in a reasonable amount of time, as well. I don't know what the deal is with C, but wait times there can be ridiculo.

Yep, although C seems better lately. My average wait time lately has been less than 15 minutes from the time I was off the plane until the bag arrived.

Non-Suck Aerodromes:

IAH
PDX
FLL
MSP
CLT
DCA
AMS
MEX Terminal 2
PTY
SCL
LIM
MUC
HEL
HKG
AKL
BKK (Huge, but )

I'm sure there's some I've left off the list, but those are all pretty good, IMHO.

MSP depends. If it's your origin or destination it's generally great. If you're connecting it's all over the map. A connection from the far reaches of the regional concourses out in A or B to something on the F concourse can be pretty awful. It's better than it used to be, but tight connections there can still be a huge pain. The high number G gates are also a very long walk from the ticket counters and main security checkpoints, without the benefit of the tram that the A, B, and C gates have. Again, not a big deal if you've got time. It can be a huge problem if you're running late.

I have been to several of those on your list and no complaints, MKE is bordering on non suckage too.

What's wrong with TYR? You can show up like 30 minutes before the flight and you're good. Takes all of 2 minutes to drop a rental car, print a boarding pass, check a bag, and you'll still have to wait 10 minutes for them to open security. And it's one of the nicest small town airport terminals anywhere.

ABI on the other hand, while having the benefits of a small airport, is just a hole. But that could be said about the entire city too.

No reason to. It's one of the best walking cities in the world. Parking is also in short supply and if you can find it, expensive. Why waste the time and money? A car in San Francisco is nothing but a hassle. You're better off on foot and Muni.

MEM? Really? Why?

I don't mind some parts of ORD at all. And IAD is fine as long as you don't have to deal with C/D. Unfortunately every time I'm there I do. IAD B is rather nice and A isn't too horrible for a RJ terminal.

At MLU, I arrived 13 minutes before the flight I wanted to SDC was to board :D

I used to love flying home when I worked in Tyler regularly. I could stay at the client until 5:00 PM on Thursday, go eat dinner in an actual restaurant, fill up the car with gas, and arrive at the airport around 6:25-6:30 for a 7:00-ish flight to IAH. I'd drop the car keys, print my boarding pass if I needed to, and most of the time still have to wait 10 minutes for TSA to open the checkpoint, as they usually don't open it there until the plane calls in range.

mersk862 can tell you "good food" means "before 2100".
