Mike, I am sorry but I now know that work is stopping me from travelling that weekend. We have lots of US based deadlines clashing with CNY - so no free time for me I'm afraid. Also Mr GK's mother arrives in HK on Sat Jan 17th now, so going to be difficult for him to get away as well! Sorry. Have fun. Next year, please pick a weekend a bit further away from CNY ! Cheers.

Graham,

So close and yet so far. It is a busy time of year though. Just have to plan to hook up in one of the other SE Asian locales sometime in February.

See you two soon,

Mike

Clarification request: For dinner on Saturday 1/17, is 7 p.m. the meeting time to get the taxis from the Conrad, or the time the dinner starts?

Rusty,

A good question I suspect others have as well. 7pm is the time to be at Jumbo. We will leave the Conrad about 6:30 or so I imagine. It will only take 15-20 minutes or so to get there so we may be under way by 6:40 more realistically. Dinner will start when everybody (or most everybody if several come on their own) is at the table. This is not terribly formal so we have a bit of flexibility vis a vis the 7pm start. The main body of people will be there then though and if need be we can start on various munchies if others are on the way and need a few extra minutes.

Thanks for raising this and see you in SIN soon.

Mike

Given that 17th is the weekend b4 CNY, I reckon we had better make reservations. From past experience, families tend to have their reunion dinners on the weekend prior to CNY.

Any idea on the final headcount?

Another good point. In fact on 11/26 I did make reservations for 15 people so we are set in that regard. Head Count appears to be about that number but when I made the reservation I advised Jumbo I may be revising the number slightly. In reviewing my notes I see I have written that the resrvation is for 7:30pm Above and on the webpage it is shown as 7pm. I will call Jumbo later today and see if my notes in my dairy are correct. I will post again to this thread in about 8 hours on this point. In any case the reservations are set, but I will confirm the time for everybody in a post later today.

Thanks for the reminder and I shall be back to you all soon,

Mike

Just confirmed with Jumbo and the reservation is set for 7:30. Must have been sleeping when I rang them last time. It is fine this way as we do have to rush so much. Name of reservation is "Mike" so I shall see you all at the Conrad upstairs in the lounge for a rendezvous beforeahand or at the restaurant directly. Please send a note or post here if you will join us at the Conrad for a taxi share.

See you soon in SIN,

Mike

The original plan was 6:00, leaving at 6:30,
http://home.inter.net/mjm/sinrun04itins.html
so perhaps the new plan should be 6:30, leaving
at 7 ... or else, depending on the bibulous habits
of the crowd, 6:00, leaving at 7

Michele,

I imagine people will be there sometime between 6 and 6:30. As dinner reservation is for 7:30 now, I think getting folks ready to leave the hotel by 7pm will be my focus as far as the taxi is concerned. As far as gathering for drinks and chat, I think that anytime from 6pm onwards will see FTers gathering in the lounge. I amk planning to try to be there shortly after 6 myself.

Sorry for the slight mix-up on times. <sheepish grin>

See you guys soon........

Mike

Hey Guys. Just noticed your thread. I'm in SIN for the month, so maybe I'll stroll over to Lau Pa Sat Saturday after midnight.

For the moment I wanted to put in a plug for the Furama Hotel for any future stays. It's one short block from the new Chinatown MRT station. Asiatravel has it for S$115 and it's an awfully good place for that price. ADSL in the room is an extra S$35.

The LAX-NRT flight leaves at 11:15am, so we'll be in the air by the time you arrive. Another time?

UA is in T1 at Changi Airport.

http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/sin...29072,00.html?

One-stop transport centre at T1 a big hit
EVERY day, about 900 people use CityCab's airport shuttle service to the city, a 45 per cent jump compared to two weeks ago.

The centre, near the old taxi queue at Terminal 1, houses several booths, including one for the airport shuttle service and another for the limousine taxi service. The sharp increase came after Changi Airport set up a Ground Transport Centre at the arrival hall of Terminal 1, which informs visitors of the different modes of transport available.

New signs directing people to the centre, which was set up on Dec 19, were also put up inside the restricted area for passengers and in the arrival hall.

The centre, near the old taxi queue, houses several booths, including one for the airport shuttle service and another for the limousine taxi service.

CityCab's shuttle service, using seven-seater taxis, ferries passengers from the airport to different points around the city, including most hotels and MRT stations, for $7 an adult and $5 a child.

A car rental counter will also be opened soon, said the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).

At the centre, visitors can also purchase a special card entitling them to discounts of up to 40 per cent at selected hotels and eateries in Singapore.

The card can also be used to pay for bus and MRT rides and topped up when the $10 stored value is used up.

Before the centre was set up, the various booths were located in different parts of the arrival hall and there was no car rental booth.

CAAS spokesman Albert Tjoeng said: 'The counters for the different services were available before, but the one-stop centre located near the taxi queue is more visible and makes it easy for visitors to make informed decisions, especially if they are in Singapore for the first time.'

Those interviewed at the airport agreed.

Mr Timothy Scott, 29, an IT product manager living in London, said: 'The signs are very clear and the moment I stepped into the arrival hall, I saw the huge overhead sign. Very convenient indeed.'

Indian student Attupurath Abraham, 18, said: 'The last time I came to Singapore, I saw the signs that said airport shuttle service and limousine service. But visitors may not always know what these refer to. When you have a sign that says Ground Transport Centre, it is more clear.'

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) also plans to set up a booth for visitors near the centre.

Similar services will be available at Terminal 2 when it is upgraded by next year, said Mr Tjoeng.

Sounds good, although it doesn't mention when the shuttle runs. With so many of us arriving on those 'midnight' flights from NRT it would be great if this service ran 24 hrs.
