That's fine once I can get there but I am wondering about from the time that I land in PRG until I can get to someplace to exchange money.

Are either dollars or Euros easily accepted?

I'm totally missing the issue here ... if you have money and want to exchange, I've yet to be in any inernational airport without an exchange window of some sort (bank or just facility), or an ATM. There should be no problem making the exchange prior to venturing to the city, how much you exchange at likely unfavorable (versus the city) rates, is your call.

We have been told, several times in this thread, not to exchange money at the airport -- that the rates are outlandish.

If that is the case, I was wondering if there is a foreign currency which is acceptable throughout Prague.

So limit your airport exchange to just 20 bucks/euros, whatever nominal amount is needed to transit downtown, then proceed to the place noted above if exchanging cash.

That's fine if the airport exchange point does not charge a set amount for making the transaction. (I tried buying $50 worth of Czech money in ATL and was told there is a $10 charge in addition to the difference in exchange rates.)

I generally use an Oz Card at an Airport ATM that gives rates close to commercial cross rates - with NO other fees.

Since we're hitching a ride to town with you, PM me, we can work something out.

Good enough! I will PM you closer to the date. All I will need is enough to last me for about a day and then I can repay you after I exchange money.

The ride to the hotel will go on my hotel bill, but we will need a little money to tip the driver.

Dov, I got a great rate at the PRG airport ATM. Is there some reason you need to exchange cash instead of just getting it out of the machine? Everyone takes credit cards, too.

I was just going to chime in my two cents worth.... ATM's are the only way I ever exchange/get money overseas. To be sure, I keep a little changepurse of euros, pounds, and pesos to prime the pump.... that's typically just left over money from my last trip. Ever since ATM's came into existence that is where I get my money. Seems to be just about the best exchange rate as well. I also check on my Bank's website and can usually find 'compatible' banks overseas, i.e. banks which charge little or no extra fees for using their ATM.

I just checked my statement and the three Prague ATMs I used did not charge any fees. I haven't exchanged money anywhere since 2000 when I realized nobody even wants travelers checks.

Note to self: Try to estimate how much CZ cash needed for the weekend & get only that. The rest of my trip will be Euro-based. But Dovster does raise a good point - in a pinch, which other currency is more likely to be accepted? Euro or US$?

Cheers.

This is all purely a guess But I don't mind taking a Fermi stab...

It's likely the both would be accepted - they are major currencies. On a hunch, perhaps EUR would be more accepted, because it's easily traded in demand with the neighbours of Czech Republic. Another view: I checked the number of CZK you would get vs 1 USD and 1 EUR and the trend graphs over the last month. It shows a decreasing trend for the CZK v USD (i.e. you're getting less CZK per 1 USD over the last month) whereas the CZK v EUR is holding steadier. So not only are EUR a steadier currency and may be more preferred (at least until the USD shows solid signs of recovery), you're likely not to have to play the exchange rate game as much with EUR compared to USD.

In the end, it probably matters squat (i.e. you're not changing huge amounts nor playing the currency game, so even if you had a small loss it wouldn't matter), and keeping some CZK isn't disastrous until Czech Republic join the EUR, which may not happen for a while, and some people might want to go back to PRG some time.

I have changed hotels to the Hilton (not Old Town) and will be arriving via FRA at 11:45am on the 10th.

Dovster, if arrangement with serfty does not work out, why don't you call your limo company and ask which currency they'd prefer? They might be hungry for some $. @:-)

As well as - would the driver be interested in exchanging some of your $ for local money, and/or make a stop at that "best rate" agency on your way to hotel?
