The 5k policy has been in effect for quite some time whereby you can pay for $.01 to $50 in base ticket costs over the TYP limit with each 5K extra points up to, I believe, a limit of $400 (or 40K TYP points). So if your limit is $1800 base price on a particular ticket you could actually get a $2200 base price ticket if you were willing to add an additional 40K TYPs to the pot. Not a very good value but helpful if you need it or if you want to burn the last of what will otherwise be some orphan TYPs after Feb. 28.

So my understanding is that 90K pts is now worth:

a) $ 1600 Bus class: $1800 fare minus $150 change fee (approx) minus
$50 approx taxes; OR

b) $ 1100 Coach (20K up to $400; + 70K addl pts @ 5000 pts/$50 =
14*$50=$700); OR

c) $900 (approx): buy 9 @ $100 Gift cards if you can find them at that
price (eg Sears $100= 10K pts)

Correct ?

A word to the wise, have a backup and keep refreshing your flight on expedia while you wait on hold. By the time I finally got through, the flight was no longer available. Now it's back to the drawing board. If anyone has a $1800 domestic flight on AA I'd appreciate it if you'd post it. I am having a hard time finding another.

Update: I successfully booked DCA to LAS via LAX for 2/27 return 3/5.

We should all forward this developing story to Consumerist and fire off EECB... It's unacceptable that they changed the values before giving us fair notice...

Man... I had a perfect fare lined up on AA for $2897 with taxes but no, they had to go and change the rules. The rep I spoke with said the rule changed TODAY nonetheless, and she spoke plainly about this "strategy" we've been employing as the reason behind the change.

the sneaky little -*%*

ok, i finally accrued 60k today (i was going to buy the additional 30k for a business domestic until this switcheroo), now i guess i'm stuck between 3x20k domestic coach or 1x60k Europe domestic.

any suggestions for which is better?

anyone have a specific price point to be looking for on Expedia (like the $2900 to reap $2700 for business domestic) for either of these? i have searched around at length but everyone has been so busy with the finer points of getting $2700 and now $1800 that these lower options have very little info.

fwiw, i'd prefer CO and will live with AA.

thanks so much for keeping us updated on their shenanigans... and thanks in advance if anyone has any thoughts.

I am on the phone with them. But I keep getting the answer "TYN reserves the right to change T & Cs at any point". I am point out the 30 day written rule.

Good suggestion! I just spoke with someone who sounded capable (although, of course, things well may turn out to be just as crappy as they appear to be today). We shall see...

I just booked BGM-MEX on UA labor day weekend for 45k points. The base fare comes out to exactly $900

Change fee on the fare is the same as it would be for a domestic ($150), taxes were a bit steep, but those all get added into the value of the ticket so it's not like I'm throwing that money away.
