Your linked article doesn't come remotely close to supporting the text I bolded above.

French researchers plan to give nicotine patches to coronavirus patients and frontline workers after lower rates of infection were found among smokers.


Researchers theorized nicotine could prevent the virus from infecting cells or that nicotine was preventing the immune system from overreacting to the virus.

This may account for the low mortality rate in China. Where males are more likely than not to smoke.

This new evidence shows nicotine might prevent smokers from catching coronavirus




Conclusions and relevance: Our cross sectional study in both COVID-19 out- and inpatients strongly suggests that daily smokers have a very much lower probability of developing symptomatic or severe SARS-CoV-2 infection as compared to the general population.
