So you never know where it'll happen.

A good way for the neighborhood committee to get rid of a business they don't like having around.

I guess we can add nimbyism to list of American customs exported to China.

At first, I thought you wrote Dove bars, which are ubiquitous in Chinese 便利店, even if they're long expired.

El Nido is definitely not a dive bar.

Dive bars are not always defined in a negative manner..such as a "hole in the wall"
I recall going many times to the only expat bar in Kunshan back 20 years named "Wonderful". That place
was definitely "a hole in the wall".

"A dive bar is an informal bar or pub. Such bars are sometimes referred to as neighborhood bars, where local residents gather to drink and socialize.
Individual bars may be considered to be disreputable, sinister, or even a detriment to the community
."

I understand that the term has a broad definition, and agree that El Nido might have started out as a dive bar, but after its drink prices closed in on $10, I think it's safe to say that it graduated from this rank. The same goes for pretty much everywhere in SLT. Beijing is quite different now than it was even 5 years ago in this respect.

Fair price...can't ever recall actually getting a really good mixed drink in China. Maybe in the last few years that has changed. Should be lots of award space opening up when travel resumes..will be a good time to go to China. Look forward to that.

The Ritz Mojito" $36 Beijing

A dive bar is not the same as a neighborhood bar, although they could be correlated if the neighborhood is a dump.

True every bar I been to in Beverly Hills was pretty nice! Plus the quality of the drinks are top notch.
Went to Soho house bar in Malibu..excellent quality of drinks. Can say never had a quality mixed
drink even at best rated bars and 5 star hotels....anywhere in China.

Is that what I think it is?! If so it's really classed up.

FWIW I think Shanghai has some of the best cocktail bars in Asia now.

Yeah, I'm more of a wine than cocktail fan, but I would have guessed that some of the fancy places on the Bund would have good but very expensive cocktails.
