Does all the different post mean that you must have a paid tix stating that within 72

hours of the exact time when arrival passport was stamped--you are required to have an itiniery , OR fully paid tix to depart on an other airline than the one you arrived ( but they could be in the same alliance). An other way asking if you could have just a one way ticket and some reservations on a different airline to depart within such 72 hours?)

Paid ticket to 3rd country. Not to country you came from.

The ticket must be a CONFIRMED one (i.e. not standby). Whether it was paid or award is irrelevant to Chinese Immigration. Doesn't matter if it's on one ticket, separate tickets, separate airlines, alliances, etc. As long as the scheduled departure of the flight is to a 3rd country and not more than 24 or 72 hours after the scheduled arrival. The exact time the passport was stamped is irrelevant. Time limit depends on which airport(s) you are transiting and what your passport is.

Don't recall one ways coming up before, but suspect that would be fine, as they only looked at my onward ticket, and did not check my return ticket of the arriving rez.

I assume you include reward ticket under "paid" ticket.

Arrived both PEK and PVG on paid UA tickets and left on reward tickets on TG both times.

Yes, above JieJie accurately defined it as "CONFIRMED".
Gifted, awarded, paid for, bartered, found on the floor...it must be CONFIRMED.

This means NOT nonrev in general as they're standby. Also, the ticket must have actually been issued/purchased; having a reservation that hasn't been ticketed is not enough. You need a receipt with the ticket number.

Hi,

My wife and I will be arriving in PVG on SQ J with a 3hr 40min layover before our ANA J flight to NRT. From what I've read, it appears that we will need to pass immigration/customs and collect our bags before checking back in. The issue here is that she has a Malaysian passport which means she is not eligible for the 72hr visa waiver. Will she need to apply for a transit visa before we go? Or potentially could I collect both the bags and check them in myself while she remains airside? I'm also contemplating booking an Expedited Immigration Clearance service to help make things more efficient just in case there are any delays.

Any assistance appreciated. Thanks

Note that China offers 24 hour transit without visa to most nationalities. Can your wife use that?

Hi MSPeconomist,

I've heard a few different stories. Most people have said we should be able to show our tickets to immigration and I've written to the local embassy to ask just to be sure. Was hoping someone out there might have had a similar itinerary recently and could share their experience.

Have you checked the list of passports eligible for 24 hour transit without visa in China?

Malaysian passport holders get 24 hours' transit without visa at PVG and at all Chinese airports when on international transit. This is definite. Yes, you must show your onward tickets to immigration when you get to PVG. Note that both you and she must have either a visa for the next destination (Japan) or qualify for visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry there. This will likely be checked at your origin point (SIN?)...possibly also upon arrival at PVG.

There is no such list. It's an "all nationalities except" sort of thing. The exceptions mostly being those that are on the 72 hour list. Maybe a few specified nationalities that the Chinese blackball from time to time, who wouldn't be allowed TWOV and therefore need true transit visas. Most of those nationalities aren't likely to access, read, or post on FT.

Thanks jiejie.

I've also just received confirmation from the Visa Centre here describing exactly what you have said. Now I just have to hope that 3.5 hrs is enough to make our connection!!

According to an article posted on shanghai list.com, in the first eight months (through August) of the 72 hour TWOV policy, 8300 people have used it in Shanghai, including 1200 USA citizens.

Having used it twice, do I count as one or two?
