could be a fun game...

TSA: Pronounce your name
Me: John Smith
TSA: It says John Doe here.
Me: It's pronounced Smith, are you telling me how to pronounce my name?

I've considered doing this, but haven't yet for two reasons. First, I haven't had the "pleasure" of getting interrogated prior to boarding an A/C. Second, I risk losing my job if I have any negative experiences w/ the TSA (my job requires a security clearance, and I've heard too many horror stories about clearances being denied because the investigator didn't like the applicant...).

Best of luck to anyone who tries this, and please post the results here. If nobody gets taken away to a back room I may give it a try.

As is, my current plan is to pull out a copy of Goalie's CFRs and ask them where it says I have to say my name.

From Betty White SNL skit:
What's your last name? "Blarrrrrfingaaarrrrr"
How is that spelled? "S-M-I-T-H"
And your first name? "Blarrrrrfingaaarrrrr"
And how is that spelled? "L-E-E"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fClIJ...eature=related

If I ever end my flying boycott, I'm saying this.

If you're going to go that route, you may as well go with Throatwarbler Mangrove

Off the topic of the name game...
at AUS I had an ID checker start flipping through my passport.

I asked what she was looking for, got the stare,
then "We have the right to look through here".

I know there is an (incomplete) discussion of this,
maybe a year ago here on FT,
but does anyone have any recent experience with this,
and know if it is now addressed in writing anywhere ??

One solution I liked was to put a bunch of rubber bands
very tightly around the pages,
so that only the the first page was easily viewable.

I never tried it, just wen't back to DL to speed things up.
But now... I have my $15 GE card, we'll see how THAT "goes".

Get a Passport card or use your GE card.

AUS is out of control and out of sync with most other airports. Unfortunate, too, because it doesn't have the strip-search machines yet.

Yes, I am anxious to give my new GE card
it's first test at TSA, not just CBP !

This happened to me at some airport that I cannot recall. The TSA person was thoroughly examining my large passport with extra pages sewn in full of visas and entry/exit stamps. From that day on, I chose not to use my passport for identification purposes for travel within the US. Incidentally, I travel internationally a lot (as evidenced by my monster passport) and no one else (no other immigration agent or security checker) has ever looked at my passport in such detail.

because entering the United States at a Customs Port of Entry is different than passing through an airport checkpoint in the United States.

The TSA does not (see the CFRs posted above); they have just usurped the authority like so many other things. But the basic objection is that it is simply absurd and has zero (none, nada) 'security' implications.

Google 'Noibi" for background on this nonsense.

You may be prepared to engage in any little charade the TSA performs; others are not. It's just SILLY.

:confused::confused::confused:
I travel often with my minor children who do not produce ID's at the check point. More times than not the TSA ID checker asks, "Who's Sally? Who's Jane?" What can be an appropriate response and avoids them getting molested?

PBQ

In your situation with minor children who do not have to produce I/D nor except under rare instances, actually have I/D, a question from a TSO like you proposed is imho, completely valid and within the law as there is no I/D being presented to be verified to the pax and for an answer, either the kids can say their respective names while raising their hand or you can "point out which kid is which" and once done, that's it. What I was getting at in my post applies to those of us who present I/D and that once the I/D is presented and everything matches, that's it-the law has been satisfied.

Clear as mud now? ;) :)

Which means absolutely nothing when it comes to satisfying the TSA.

I'd love to see what happens when Mike Krzyzewski walks through the checkpoint.

TSA: Please pronounce your last name.
Coach K: Ker-zy-zoo-ski.
TSA: Thank you, have a nice day.

It seems to me like the regulation clearly says you are required to state your name.
"An individual must provide his or her full name, as defined in §1560.3 of this chapter, date of birth, and gender when.... The individual makes a request for authorization to enter a sterile area."

I guess you could argue that you are providing your name when you hand over your ID, but that is not clear.

Provide does not equal "say" or "pronounce" or "spell".
