You never have to go through security to leave the airport after customs. There's a thread here about refusing and being escorted out of the airport by TSA. It takes a long time but is certainly possible.

It's much easier at PIT now, thanks to the work of a fellow FTer. ^

Beckoa and I passed through TSA at FAI a few days ago. They were not equipped to handle two opt-outs in a row. Security became so far behind even with just a few people in line, that they had to shut down security just to finish our pat-downs.
Maybe if they were on top of it and not trying to retaliate by making us wait. Beckoa got the speech about how the machines are safe and that we should not opt-out and when they were called out on the safety BS. the TSA guy monitoring the checkpoint mentioned that he found out on google that it was tested and proven safe. What a crock of, well you know.

Flew out of DEN this morning, and had to opt-out. I had hoped that passing through the checkpoint at 4:45am would have the NoS shut down, but that didn't happen.
NoS open and ready for their next victims, while the WTMDs were only being used for families with little kids, airport employees, FAs, etc.
Had to wait about five minutes for the groping, during which time I was the only opt-out.. The sheeple filed right into the NoS.
Clerk didn't protest when I asked him to change his gloves, or use a fresh swab. However, he didn't make eye contact with me. Assumed that he was uncomfortable groping other men..
In other news, I was told that Pre-Check should be up and running by Oct/Nov...

You should be offered a disposable paper drape for additional privacy before the beginning of a pat-down.

Now, for the two open lines, there are 10 TSOs or more in that area "working" in order to handle one MMW and two X-ray carryon lines.
Finally, two TSOs peel off from the mob and walk over to a third lane. One sits down at X-ray seat, other opens lane and stands behind WTMD. They let people come into the lane. By my count, 5 or 6 people go through WTMD for each one person getting through MMW. And with just two TSOs!
Amazing.... oh, and I was the first person able to get into that newly opened lane, allowing me my first SDOO success at EWR since November 2011.

I just went through PIT. The main checkpoint was a madhouse, so I decided to try my luck at the alternate checkpoint. It was a mistake and just as bad. However, after I got to the TDC, I could see that only the WTMD was open and the NoS was roped off. ^
Things were going very well, but there was a family two people ahead, and they fumbled hard with a car seat. It wouldn't fit through the x-ray, and the WTMD TSO came by to help. They were causing both lines to come to a screeching halt, and that's when they unroped the backscatter. I was at the guy who brought the car seat for ruining my SDOO. He went through the WTMD, but the TSO funneled the guy in front of me and me to the Rapiscan.
The opt-out was uneventful. The male assist changed his gloves as he had just finished manually inspecting the car seat. He used the word groin and resistance in his speech, and I was tempted to ask him to define what resistance meant since he had mentioned groin earlier. However, I didn't want to delay my process any further, and the inner thigh check didn't even make it halfway up the cargo shorts I was wearing. A minute later, the ETD came back negative, and I was off.
On another note, I did see they were using the backscatter with ATD at the center lane at the main checkpoint. I've started another thread discussing this. Unfortunately, I didn't have a clear vantage point when I came down the escalator from the alternate checkpoint to get a picture.

Really? My phone number is...
OUCH! as my wife smacks me in the back of the head.
BOS B terminal has a SDOO, with the WTMD on the left and NoS on the right. Lined up and waited 20 minutes while they cleared a whopping eight people at the WTMD only to get to the front and be pointed to the NoS.
Stuffed my wallet in my backpack just before sending it through, got yelled at for having the temerity to hold my watch in my hand and told my wife twice, loudly, to watch my bag to make sure nobody steals anything. The TSO must have heard me, since they made a big show of making sure I could see my bag.
Patdown was quick and efficient. In fact, I was done before my wife who had, despite my warnings, chosen to stay in the NoS.

Was going to opt-out in Bozeman yesterday, but then saw the lady in front do an opt-out and the screener was stroking her hair and literally feeling around her breasts - I figured 'screw that' and just went into the MMW.
Seriously, if I had videotaped her patdown, I could have uploaded it to Xtube and made money.

Advise him that YOU found on Google that they weren't allowed to wear dosimeters, even if THEY provided the units personally. What's up with that if the NoS are so safe? Eh....eh?

I realize that it could be argued that they're just being practical or evenhanded by saying that it's safe, but there's something kinda sorta creepy about TSA trying to change people's minds by telling people at the checkpoint in what could be construed as a moment of duress (and I paraphrase), "Don't listen to those crazies! It's perfectly safe."
I'm fine with TSA having a public relations campaign or posting signs at the airport, but telling people while they're standing there just doesn't seem right or fair.
