No, I would not expect this. The problem is that many of us rely heavily on our credit/charge cards, both for day-to-day transactions and while traveling. Personally, I expect my card issuers to be able to handle situations like this in a resonable manner. Assuming that I am within my credit limit, and my account is current, I expect that charges will be authorized.

I fully understand the issuer's need to protect against fraud. Despite what they say ("We're doing this for your protection"), they're really doing it for their protection, as the cardholder is not responsible for fraudulent charges. This is fine with me. What I have a problem with is when the issuer's fraud prevention gets in the way of my legitimate charging activity.

If I was at the point of sale, they have a couple of ways to handle it without declining the charge. Assuming that the charge is declined and I have to call the card issuer, one way for them to handle it is to ask you for information that other people are unlikely to have, such as to name two transactions you made a couple of weeks ago and the approximate amounts. Another is to have the merchant ask for and verify your ID. In any event, they should have a system in place to resolve this at the point of sale.

Assuming you're no longer at the merchant, they should be able to resolve this by either you calling from your home phone, or them calling you at your home or work phone that's on the account. This, along with asking a couple of questions, should allow them to verify who you are.

There's little doubt in my mind as to what the situation is: the regular authorization and customer service departments at Chase are not empowered to handle this situation, and the security department doesn't take inbound calls from customers. As a cardholder, I would find this unacceptable, especially from such a large bank as Chase.

Although they have their own issues, the two companies that I do the most business with, Citibank and American Express, seem to be much better set up to handle this sort of situation.

Every bank has there issues. I have been with chase for about 3 years without a hitch. They continually offer me 0% transfers, and I don't even ask them, they offer them to me. I even received a solicitation from Chase for a 0% card, I called them and told them I already had a card and wanted that rate on that card (even though a 0% rate for a year had just expired) and the lady called me back three times and got the rate put on,I had to do a transfer to initiate it.

I am impressed with Chase and their CS people. Never had a charge denied and had to call them on the spot. Have with some other cards, and they have always approved it with a few questions.

Being a victim of fraud numerous times, believe me, they are protecting you (and themselves) by placing a hold on your account. You may not have to pay, but you have to "prove" through affidavits and numerous phone calls that you did not make the charge. Than you have your credit report to straighten out. It can be very time consuming, especially if your identity is stolen.

Saar and wldtrvlr,

Did you have to pay a transaction charge to get the 0%?

I've been getting 0% offers from Chase (with my bill) but they all have a 3% transaction fee ($50 max). Although $50 is a pretty low fee for one year (that equates to about a 0.5% interest rate for a $10,000 loan of 1 year), I of course would like to do better if I can.

Update on the situation:
Chase Corp called and explained that they put my account on Security Review because my address did not match with their record??I really don't know what they are talking about for I don't usually do business with them and I know all my addresses in my credit report so there is no way for them to mix this up. She also asked me if I wanted to re open the account, I refused, she apologized for the inconvenience that caused me, which was actually the second person from Chase that actually did that.

Chase is on the same customer service level as FirstUSA--PURE, UNADULTERATED SH*T!

Avoid them in the future at all costs.

I had the Chase Continental Platinum Card for a year, and I had to called them three times and emailed them twice to get the 10K promotional sign-up bonus posted instead of usual 6K.

Gotta watch out when you deal with them. I know the customer service reps. in general get paid low wages, but they don't seems to be courteous or proactive when you call them.

Yes, I switched to the fee-free Stockback Card after a year only because of the incentives. Anyway, they have fairly high fee structures for "Preferred Cardholders" compare to other big-time banks.

I agree how bad the Chase is.
I lost word when I found out that they calculate monthly interest by "HAND."
Can you imagine that?
I wonder who and how they could calculate interest without any mistakes for such a huge number of accounts....
I have checked the interest payment on my account and realized that they were not paying me enough interest.
The way they calculated monthly average balance was weired, too.
Of course, I transfer my account to somewhere else.

Just got notice today that Chase is doing away with its partnership with Shell Gasoline. Did anyone else get this notice?

Hi,

I have had 2 good experiences with Chase Visa. The recent one related travel was that I left my wallet in the back seat of a taxi but the taxi driver found it and gave it back. While wondering where my wallet was, I called my credit card issuers. Sears Mastercard immediately canceled the card and sent me another. Chase offered to put a hold on it temporarily to see if it turned up which it did.

The other experiance was I paid for homeowners insurance wit the card, bit the agent kept the money and didn;t pay for the insurance. I disputed the charge and Chase Visa ate it.

I am sorry to hear of others trouble with Chase.
