However, later the same day I also requested the credit by Secure Message (for "baggage fees) and it was approved. Very YMMV now but still doable. 2/10/2017
Southwest Airlines GCs work fairly easily. I've generally bought them for $150 and said they're excess baggage fees.

For folks who are lowering their limit, two/three questions: (1) are you doing this by calling in or by sm? (2) does this have to be done before you PAY the annual (mine posted last statement and I've already paid it off)? (3) any thoughts on risk of shutdown?

I did it via SM. It doesn’t have to be done before you pay, I paid off my fee and then the credit offset some other purchases in the next statement. I wouldn’t worry about a shutdown.

Yes. Today I booked 2 nights at a St.Regis using the Ritz Certs. You can call the SPG Member number at +1-888-625-4988. The rep will do two separate reservations. She said you can also do it online but one needs two different bookings, one per night and the certs can be applied online directly.

Are you sure gift cards don't work? I've heard recent DPs regarding them. I bought myself an Air Canada gift card for 375 CAD (about 280 USD) and passed it off as a Maple Leaf Lounge membership, got instantly reimbursed via SM. They might be more savvy with respect to buying US gift cards depending on how they show up though. Dunno if you could buy yourself a "United Club Membership".
according to FAQ, gift card purchase will show up as either egift or buy a tab

It showed up as buyatab and didn't even code as travel. Rep didn't question it. It helped that I picked a number where if they googled it it would actually correspond to the price of the membership.

As others have said already, my certs also posted today. Checked the Marriott app on my phone during lunch break and didn't have them or the points in my account. Closed out the app and a few minutes later had an email from Marriott that my certs had been applied to my account. Opened app back up and there they were. Odd, but, a sigh of relief!

For context, I was trying to wait to complete the spend req until end of October, so I could get it in my November statement and have the certs last at least through my anniversary. Is "un-doing" the signup bonus something anyone has ever tried to do? I literally just want the cert to last through ideally xmas, or worst case through mid November.

So... randomly, I also got my certs posted last night (didn't even notice). But I haven't fulfilled the spend req.

You could try just having marriott extend the expiration dates?

I did have a refundable ticket I wound up cancelling after it posted, so ... would that count towards the MSR?
*In any event, I think your advice about working the marriott side to extend them is the most likely tactic that will bear fruit. May or may not bother asking Chase (except to confirm how far from the MSR I am -- if nothing else, knowing if the airline credited spend counts towards the MSR would be good to know, going forward).

How far from fulfilling the MSR? Intentionally I am just ~$100. (Would be ~$400 but I used up the airline credits -- not even sure if those count? I've been operating assuming I need to spend ~$400 at this point.)

But yes if you buy something and it posts and then you get a refund, that refund doesn’t count against you (even so, I like to spend above this anyway).
Let us know if you get it extended! I’ve seen past DP’s have success (pre merger)

I've met the spend required for the old Gold Status in the card year 2017-2018, and therefore should be old Gold / new Platinum until January 31, 2020 (end of 2019 basically).
Of course my position is a little unique because my card year end falls smack in the middle between the transition date (8/18) and the new benefit kicking in (8/26) - but so far it seems I've did not get the status nor the free night.
Let's see what Chase will come back with.

Communicating with Chase is a waste of time. Everything goes into a black hole to never be heard again from, with a request to wait yet another 6 business days for a response.
On the other hand, Marriott had confirmed the expiration date of the Platinum status would be 1/1/2020 (which they could not do before - I guess the ripple effects of the merger are finally subsiding). This contradict what I've got before - so either it was a merger effect that finally was corrected, or Chase pushed the right information, but just is doing a very bad job in communicating it.

I've heard that before but have you seen it in writing or private message? Thanks.
