If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:
CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

Are there known reports of shutdown if I close a card through a Secure Message request? This is for a Hyatt card opened last year, with first annual fee come due.

You may not be able to do this thru SM. I'm guessing you'll have to call to close it.

You guessed wrong Chase lets you close accounts (and move credit lines) via SM no problem (done it several times this year already.

Unless you want to find out if there is retention offer, always close accounts via SM - both with Chase and Citi. Far easier than call. No waste of time.
You can close AMEX card via Chat too despite AMEX got rid of SM years ago.

The most important part of this is the shutdown question.

Agreed. SM wizardry is nice, but it's a technicality compared to the essence of their question. :P

I personally have only heard of shut downs after people apply for Hyatt cards (and other co-branded cards), usually get approved, spend a bit, THEN get shut down. Not shut down actually after a closure of a card. It might cause Chase to put more scrutiny on you for your next move with them, if you fit a profile of having lots of new accounts in their eyes.

Although this thread is active with many posts expressing theories, scenarios, remedies and outright fears of shutdowns, I observe that amid that hubbub there seems to be a lull in reports of account closures.

Yes. And it isn't like any reasonable person is getting joy out of shining a light on shutdowns. I'd LOVE some Park Hyatt action, but...

Fate of UR in closed account

All my accounts show closed. This post is about the UR balance, not the closings.

I transferred the UR balance to my SO's account, which remains open at least now.

Is this enough for now? If they close the SO account, there will be time to transfer the UR to a partner, right?

Or would it make more sense to immediately transfer the URs to a partner, losing the flexibility but preserving some value?

The receiving accounts will be closed, just a matter of when.

unless something changed you have 30 days after closure to transfer the balances out.
think you might have “contaminated” the SO account with the shut down virus .....
