If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

Any guesses on this guy?

https://www.businessinsider.com/myst...old-why-2018-9

I'm thinking it's green card + fine = shutdown.

Or, he's up to something that he didn't disclose. I don't know how deep of a probe BI gave him.

Im going to go with this guess, BI didn't mention he was personally named in the DOJ settlement "....and Project Managers Bryan Sequeira, and Robert Lynes will each pay $15,000"

They did pretty much say that:

A handful of employees, including senior executives, also agreed to pay settlements to avoid potential litigation and resolve personal liability while denying wrongdoing. Sequeira, a product manager, was among them.

There's also this, though:

Additionally, Sequeira wasn't the only person named in the eClinicalWorks settlement who has Chase credit cards, yet he says colleagues told him they haven't had the same experiences with Chase.

Sequeira may not be informed of others' shutdowns. Not everybody necessarily shares that news, not even with close colleagues. And he certainly cannot know whom Chase will shut down in the future.

RNE, but I know that Chase will shut me down in June of 2033 after my arrest for trafficking in yttrium isotopes in Elon Musk's Martian colony.

BI does this whole article making to scare people about a seemingly "out of the blue" shutdown to then at the end mention that he was part of a case and paid a fine. Now, I'm not judging this individual's culpability, but the reality is that this was a pretty big corporate false claims case and in a company of over 5,000 employees, 6 individuals had to admit to some sort of liability. One of those six is the subject of this article. The article also mentions these high tech capabilities that Chase has, but I'm guessing that a case of that magnitude where he had to do that settlement carried with it a significant amount of legal expenses that he may have been charging on his Chase cards. Taken together, one can see why Chase took a deeper look. Again, I'm not judging this person, but exactly how many Chase cardholders have this in their profile (a large criminal false claims case settled only after payment of $155M USD). My ultimate problem is the premise of the article trying to scare people into thinking that Chase has this random process that is selecting people for shutdowns and making it seem like it can happen to anyone.

Frankly, I'm also surprised this guy would volunteer to do this article and alert other creditors of his event. One would think that he'd just pay the fine and be as under the radar as possible.

Reputational issues can lead to a shutdown but the BI piece is alarmist. As you pointed out, the circumstances in this case are pretty extreme.

My 2 cents tell me that this Sequeira got what he deserved. Although there could be more reasons, but just looking at the case alone, I believe it is sufficient for a shut down.

FCA is not your typical law of disputes, but a law to fight against fraud against the U.S. Government, both criminal and civil. Many entities have been sued and settled for FCA before. But when an individual, like Sequeira in this case, to be named in the settlement, even not being liable officially, you can't say such individual has absolutely no involvement. Also - what makes this even more complicated is Sequeira is an employee, rather than the executive. So it is difficult to say Sequeira's role in this FCA claim is small (otherwise, the company's should have absorbed Sequeira's wrongdoings).

Because Sequeira's case involves the issue of honesty, Chase is within its rights to exercise the termination clause unilaterally.

So far we have had a grand total of one datapoint in this thread/elsewhere of someone who was able to re-apply and get approved after a shutdown.

Are there any more? There's been enough time passed that some shutdown folks might be retrying their luck again?

The company absorbed all claims made against the named non-executive employee on the matter. It's not unheard of in False Claims Act cases for the government to try to hammer on lower level employees of a target in order to get the lower level employees to squeal more on higher level employees/executives.

There is nothing alarmist in indicating that some large financial institution is using online search tools and contractors to arbitrarily decide with which customers it wants to do business and with which it wants to refuse to do business.

Scrutinizing and criticizing what the banks are doing in the pursuit of their self-interest is entirely deserving of public discussion, review and governmental oversight (jokingly poor as the governmental oversight has been is in this regard too). To indicate that Chase is using court records and other material in the public domain to can some clients in the US is not alarmist, it's a fact.
