Will I be protected on this itinerary?
Hi,
I'll be travelling:
USA-HKG
HKG-TPE
HKG-USA
On an Asia Miles award redemption. And then a separate
KHH/TPE-HKG ticket on Avios.
The TPE-HKG-USA will be a transit in HK of less than 24 hours on the same day. All four journeys on Cathay Pacific.
I know the official answer is I won't be protected in case the TPE-HKG flight is delayed since it's on a different ticket. But I read that Cathay has been pretty accommodating in this area - and this will be transiting through HKG too.
So what you think? Will I be protected / put on the next HKG-USA flight if my TPE-HKG flight ends up being delayed / cancelled due to WX, etc?

Do you have any status with any airline?
I've been on a mixed itinerary JAL from Hawaii to Japan, then CX from NRT to HKG. Completely separate itineraries. JAL plane went tech and I was delayed a full day in Hawaii (....what a bummer
. CX ticket was Y class, can't remember exact sub fare class but probably on the cheaper side. Yet...CX rebooked me the next day without any problem at all. It was a pleasure dealing with them actually.
I was CX DM at the time.

A question: If your USA ports are the same, e.g. SFO, it will be much better to do SFO-HKG-TPE//KHH-HKG-SFO in one itinerary. You can save your Avios for something else and be protected in that case. I believe KHH-HKG is on KA.

CX will protect CX to/from CX/oneworld even on separate tickets.... there's a post on the inconclusive thread about protection across separate tickets where someone had written in to ask if a UL->CX on separate tickets would be protected and both airlines had replied in the affirmative. I had asked CX about a MH->CX transit and got the same response (though I didn't end up traveling on that booking).

MPO will not release KHH/TPE-HKG due to married segment.

American Airlines (AA) has a policy that it will protect passengers, even on separate tickets, as long as you are connecting to or from an AA flight.
Other oneworld airlines may have their own policies (official or unofficial) when connecting to/from one of their own flights.
But there is no overall policy. It is wise to assume that separate tickets means you won't be automatically protected.
