CX will protect CX to/from CX/oneworld even on separate tickets.... there's a post on the inconclusive thread about protection across separate tickets where someone had written in to ask if a UL->CX on separate tickets would be protected and both airlines had replied in the affirmative. I had asked CX about a MH->CX transit and got the same response (though I didn't end up traveling on that booking).
