Question Stopover & sector

I'm considering booking CX530 (HKG-NGO) with a stopover in TPE. With the stopover, does it count as one sector or two sectors for the trip? Thank you.

1 sector. If you do lets say a CX 474 flight (HKG-TPE) then connect to CX 530 (TPE-NGO), then thats 2.

Another example would be CX 888 service to JFK with a stop in YVR. CX 888 nonstop all the way to JFK would be 1 sector. Now, if you take CX 838 to YVR then take CX 888 to JFK, then thats 2.

Mods, I think we should have this topic in the sticky as these questions come up frequently. Just a suggestion. Cheers

It can be two sectors if it is...

1. Different flight number
2. Different ticket
3. Different class

Op, I think you may or may not be confusing the term 'stopover'. If you are referring to the flight that flies HKG-NGO with a one hour stop in TPE, it is not a stopover, in fact it would count as one flight. However, if you are speaking about the technical definition of stopover, of course it would be two sectors since its two different flights on different days

Yes, I was referring to the HKG-NGO flight w/ a one hr stop in TPE. CX calls it a "stopover" (see link). I was just wondering if it means one or two sectors. Thank you for everyone who provided the answer. This is very helpful.

It seems that your link had expired. Since it is all under one flight number, it is actually branded as a direct flight, so you will only need to pay toe miles for the one direct flight HKG-NGO

Just wondering if you had had actual experience about #2 and #3, above.

I am ticketed on CX 450/451 TPE-NRT round-trip in J on one ticket.

On the return portion, I will fly CX 451 and then immediately take a same-night flight to HKG. The TPE-HKG sector will be booked in Y on another ticket.

Therefore, if I check in at Narita for CX 451 NRT-TPE in J and then TPE-HKG in Y, although the same flight number but in a different class and under two different tickets, that would be TWO sectors, right?

Yes. Different class + different ticket but on the same flight number is counted as 2 separate sectors.

I have done this for HKG-TPE//TPE-NGO and also for HKG-BKK//BKK-SIN

Please let me ask this in a bit more detail.

Since I can get two sectors if two different tickets and/or different class, I plan to book CX 451 for NRT-TPE and then TPE-HKG.

Both will be on different tickets. NRT-TPE will be in J and TPE-HKG in Y.

So, what happens when I check in at NRT? Of course, I assume I will get two boarding passes because I am in different classes (assuming no upgrade). Then, do I have to get off the plane in TPE and then go through transfer and then get back on again? What if the flight is delayed into TPE and they do not let anyone off for transfer purposes (this has happened before). So, how would they scan my boarding pass for the second sector?

Or, can I just stay on board, even with two different boarding passes and then walk back from the J to the Y cabin when in TPE?

I left the plane on both HKG-TPE//TPE-NGO and HKG-BKK//BKK-SIN.

The NGO trip was in Y (got upgraded to J) + J, the SIN trip was J + Y (with miles upgrade to J, so it's still Y).

Yes, they'll give you two separate boarding passes. I'm not sure what happens if they don't scan the second one. Presumably you can tell the ISM that you've got two tickets. Actually on my two flights, the ISM knew I had separate boarding passes.

For the NGO flight, when I landed in TPE, they had a sign with my name on it. They checked I had my second boarding pass and did not give me a "transit card" as I wasn't a transit passenger.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for this. I will report back here after my actual flights in mid-December.

Last month, I was on CX420 ICN-TPE-HKG. ICN-TPE one ticket and TPE-HKG on another, both in J. I just told the ISM my situation and she simply informed the ground staff at TPE and they took care of everything. I remembered I bought so much dutyfree at ICN (liquid + skincare products over 100ml) but the ground staff really went out of their ways to look after my purchase at airside and escorted me to the lounge during the transit (normally you can't bring those through if transit). TPE ground staff is, in my opinion, the most helpful and friendly bunch of all the outports so you'll be absolutely fine
