I use my standard Amex quite a lot and I still got the 2,500 for Ł2,500, so I think it's a straight Standard is 2,500 and Plus is 5,000 promotion, irrespective of activity or status.

I might soon have to employ an administrator to manage all the cards and schemes I have become involved in through the great advice and tips from FT ers!

Amex cards...cancelling...points....etc

Apologies if this has been asked/said before a hundred thousand times but I'm going to ask again anyway....

I have both a BMI Plus Amex and an Amex Gold Card. Both have given me my delicious bonuses (44k between them) and both seem to offer similar low-level incentives to carry on using them. With the Gold Card I got my Quidco cash back, which meant I had a bargain.

My question is....if I was to cancel one or the other, would I have these bonuses viciously taken from me or no? I have had my gold card for 3 months, and I have already transferred my MR points to DC, and have paid my 95 fee like a good boy. If I cancel, I am told I get the fee repaid pro-rata (that is 3 quarters of it back). But do I sacrifice my MR points even though they are no longer in my Amex account? How does that work? Surely this would mean, taking Quidco into account, I make a profit (my card would cost me one-quarter of 95 pounds which is far less than the 60 pounds cashback) and get 20k miles for free?? Or must I have the card for a minimum of a year?

Same with BMI Plus, if I was to cancel it after January (once i have got my 5000 bonus miles) because the 85 fee is too high, do I sacrifice any recently gotten bonus miles or anything?

Whilst I'm here.....in my invitation to join my Gold Card I got a thing in there about conpanion tickets - how does this work? Is it as good as it sounds...(my bet: no).

I ask all this with a view of rationalising my credit as all the plastic is giving my wallet a nervous disposition. So if I keep one, given that I spend about Ł1500 a month on credit cards....which, o oracle FT types, should I keep?? )

Thanks!

It seems that MBNA don't have the notion of a simple "downgrade" process to move between the BMI Plus card and the BMI Amex. Instead, apparently, you need to apply for the new card (popping another mark on your credit record and potentially getting declined if they feel they've utilised the entire credit line they're willing to extend you ), then once you've either got the new card, or got a decline, apply to cancel the original card, and get the credit limit shifted from the old one to the new one....

Of course, who knows, the move may also trigger yet another round of bonus points.... One can but live in hope!

Speak to another agent. You can change and downgrade to the standard AMEX. The agent will need to get a supervisor involved, but it is possible. The worst that should happen is that you get a new card with a new number that is linked to your same account. There is no reason for a re-application.

Hmmmm - I might try again on Monday. The guy went off to check with their support team and called me back an hour later, so had no particular reason to disbelieve him. Does sound like a faff though!

I applied for the Plus Amex in April. I received my destinations and status miles in the first month but still have not been charged the annual fee several statements later. I wonder whether MBNA is waiting until 1 August to charge the higher fee.

Basis for monthly miles calculation

This is a bit of a random question but I can't find the answer anywhere in MBNA material.

I am wondering whether making payments between bills (i.e. payments credited to the BMI Amex account that reduce the outstanding balance before the monthly direct debit is taken) affects the calculation of destinations miles for that month.

Are the miles calculated based on the total of all transactions in a month or on the bill balance? I want to make a large payment but am worried that I might miss out on miles if it's the later.

Thanks.

The miles are calculated based upon the transactions, any payments you make won't affect the miles earned. (Refunded transactions, on the other hand, will affect miles earned, as you would likely expect.)

BMI Credit Card Newbie Question

I am hijacking this as my question does not deserve its own thread and most likely a few BMI MBNA cardholders will come across this post(i hope).

I still, after having this card for 3 months can not see an area online that breaksdown my statement to show me the points earned per transaction. I have made bmi and virgin bookings through bmi.com and i would like to see that i am earning double points although all i can see is a monthly points total at the end of each statement. Is there a way to view a list similar to the BA AMEX products?

Many thanks

And I am moving this to the 'bmi credit cards' master thread.

I don't think so. I haven't come across it.

The only way I can check is to calculate my expenditure at normal earning rates and add the bonus/es where they should be earned. I have the BD Mastercard and some MBNA AmEx cards, and this is my methodology which seems to work out.

Bonus miles should show up under a separate summary at the bottom, although not broken down in a per-transaction manner. But in theory you should find it adds up if you calculate it all yourself.

Thanks, that is as i expected. I am missing bonus points for two transactions then from last months statements. A VS and a BD flight both booked on the BMI website, do they typically take a few months to post(the bonus points) or are they instant?
