Surely this should have been picked up by the dispatcher / crew between them?

On a beautiful, clear day, all the key landmarks would have been visible out of the window. Surely someone, especially on a frequent-flyer route like this, would have noticed they hadn't for example, crossed the North Sea ?

No moving map, but surely someone would have noticed the lack of water 25 minutes after take off? Or perhaps too cloudy.

I assume the pilot and co-pilot were under the impression they were supposed to go to Edinburgh, which I kind of get

But no idea how atc at EDI didn't pick them up on it? Or perhaps they did, and it was sensible to land and take stock of the situation....

So many questions!

Sounds like there was a valid flight plan filed for LCY-EDI so I imagine they didn't see an issue.

Perhaps it was a rehearsal for no-deal Brexit when we can't fly to the EU. Unfortunately the EDI staff hadn't seen the memo and so hadn't put up the 'Welcome to Dusseldorf' signs to complete the illusion.

Flight plan was filed to EDI so ATC would have been expecting them no different to a normal service.

To adapt a saying.

All mistakes are equal but some are more equal than others.

The mind boggles at how this happened.

Luckily there is only 40 miles or so difference between the two routes so assume the calculations weren’t far out for weight and fuel between the dispatcher’s view and the pilot’s view but you have to wonder about these things......

If there was a flight plan for LCY-EDI (which it sounds like there was) then the fuel and weight calculations should have been correct for that route which is what they flew.

what a weird story - surely many of the passengers must have realized...unless it was 100% cloud cover, it's pretty obvious from LCY that you head out along the Thames and off the North Kent coast out to sea for Europe...despite being a fairly frequent flyer, I do still enjoy paying attention to what we're flying over and I'm pretty sure absent total cloud cover I'd have been onto this one pretty quickly! it must surely have had a few of the passengers puzzled!

I guess somehow WDL thought they were contracted to fly to Edinburgh and they handle all the flight plan filing, fuelling etc. BA just supplies them catering and passengers. But quite how it wasn't picked up during dispatch or during a welcome address etc is really unbelievable

I wonder what the preflight announcement said. Surely someone would have pointed out to the flight attendant that it was Dusseldorf, not Edinburgh as the destination.

I suppose if this was announced as the dusseldorf flight by the pilot and then ended up in Edinburgh that would be even more worrying. A case of engaging the autopilot and cracking on.

Did no one notice they were heading north not east, nor did they cross the sea?
