BA flight (op WDL Aviation) lands in Edinburgh instead of Dusseldorf by mistake

Must have been a fun flight
A British Airways flight destined for Dusseldorf in Germany has landed in Edinburgh by mistake, after the flight paperwork was submitted incorrectly.
The passengers only realised the error when the plane landed and the "welcome to Edinburgh" announcement was made.
The flight is now making its way from Edinburgh to Dusseldorf, BA says. German firm WDL Aviation ran the flight for BA as part of a leasing deal.
BA said it was working with WDL to find out why it filed the wrong flight plan.
"We have apologised to customers for this interruption to their journey and will be contacting them all individually," BA said in a statement.
It is not yet known how many passengers were affected by the mistake.
BA say the pilot wasn't lost at any point, but because the paperwork said Edinburgh, air traffic control allowed the flight to take that route.

I’ll summarise the expected replies
1. How much compo will they get.
2. Everyone involved shoukd be sacked and then sacked again. Then be tutted at by Olivia Coleman.
not a good situation to get into though is it? I guess once it was enroute it couldn’t easily divert back to where it should have gone?

Somewhat surprised that the passengers would only have realised on landing. Turning right instead of left or vice versa after takeoff might have been a giveaway. As would imagine would be the moving map if there was one.
Also would BA operations not have spotted the plane going completely the wrong way and attempted to contact the pilot.

It looks like yesterday (Sunday 24th) the same aircraft went:
DUS - LCY
LCY - EDI
EDI - LCY
LCY - DUS
So followed that same pattern today, but by error.
Agree with the comments above, I'm sure someone on board would of noticed the incorrect route, especially as I'm sure the flight would have many frequent flyers.

I would have thought that the PA from the flight crew would have given those on board a few clues when announcing the flying time and weather at EDI
I would not want to spend any more time on a BAe 146 than absolutely necessary even if you gave me the extra TPs for taking the scenic route!
