What are Airport Upgrade Promotions?
  • Airport Upgrade Promotions (AUPs) are offered on BA metal only, plus wet leases such as via Titan or Eastern
  • AUPs grant immediate access to lounges, Fast Track, higher Priority Boarding and additional baggage for the immediately upcoming set of flights, but not for the return leg as well.
How can I get an AUP?
  • AUPs are available to all passengers and most fare types, the key exception are non public fares, such as bulk fare
  • They are subject to availability but don't be shy to ask, it's very little work for an agent to quote the fare (it's on the top of their screen) and not much more work to do the upgrade
  • AUPs are only offered on the day of travel, there is no point asking beforehand.
  • AUPs can be done in BA operated lounges and the First Wings at LHR T5 and JFK T7 - again subject to the agent having had the relevant training.
  • AUPs are now widely available at check-in desks throughout the network - you just need FLY to be in operation

What else should I know about AUPs?
  • Some check-in agents haven't been trained in how to do AUPs - there isn't a lot you can do about this at smaller locations\
  • Basic (HBO) fares can have AUPs but the rate is usually higher than other tickets.
  • AUPs are not available at LCY departures (apparently due to the the lack of a lounge and Fast Track)
  • AUPs do give additional Tier Points and Avios, so long as the underlying ticket is a revenue ticket. That includes revenue tickets where Avios were use to part pay.
  • A few locations don't use FLY, or rather use a sub-set of it (e.g. DBV, EGC).

my comment related to 600 pounds being a good bargain for an AUP at LAX from WTP to CW was specifically for that leg and that type of upgrade at that airport. I understand Ex EU and other fares can be cheaper, leaving from Europe, but the post was about AUP at LAX and on that route it usually costs at least $900/1000, if not more.

Could someone who know how post these to the wiki:

LHR-TLV 369 pounds WT+ to Club World Could not turn this down as 1. was my wife's Birthday trip and 2. allowed us to try the A350 Suite (it is absolutely wonderful!).

LHR-ORD 699 pounds WT+ to Club World Again "forced to do this as this was 1. last leg of the Birthday trip and 2. we got aisle seats in the upper deck of 744 which I had wanted to do for a long time knowing 744 is going away. Win-win for hubby and wife .

Both fares were supposedly "promotions", they were near enough my price points given the other factors I note above.

Done, there is no "trick" to editing it as such, but you need a minimum of 90 days membership and 90 posts to your name, so once you hit that latter number you can do so yourself

I think every AUP I've ever taken - and I'm a fairly frequent user of them in percentage terms - has been described by BA as a "promotion". But as you say, sometimes the occasion calls for it

my comment related to 600 pounds being a good bargain for an AUP at LAX from WTP to CW was specifically for that leg and that type of upgrade at that airport. I understand Ex EU and other fares can be cheaper, leaving from Europe, but the post was about AUP at LAX and on that route it usually costs at least $900/1000, if not more.
And my comment was about the same. It is not a good value. I cannot see how an AUP from WTP to CW is a good bargain at this price ( 600 pounds). $1000 is a terrible value. Because the AUP is from US to Europe and the prices are usually very expensive that does not make it a good bargain. Specially when we talk about the current outdated CW product compare to what other airlines offer.

Quick question, was looking to try and AUP tomorrow evening from J to F on LHR to KUL. Seat availability just dropped down to 1 from 3, so looks like it will not happen for us. Would seats appear as occupied within F if BA wished to block them due to operational reasons? Or are these seats genuinely occupied now and I need to be content with the fact that i’ll be in J tomorrow?

Expert flyer shows only seat 1A as being available, the others being occupied.

If one has paid for seat selection (in CW) prior to paying for an upgrade to F at the airport, does that then entitle you to a refund for the original amount paid for seat selection in CW?

So long as you fill in the relevant form within 30 days on BA..com then you can get a refund, and that's not just for First AUPs.

Thoughts:
(if you're interested)

Worth it?
  • Service was definitely, almost over the top, outstanding. Didn't expect that from a WW crew - thought they were gonna be a bit "meh"
  • Food was nice, though had to insist on getting the desired starter - also if you pre-ordered a meal from the menu in WT+ or CW prior to AUP, have the agent you're doing the AUP with remove the meal code, or inform cabin crew that you will choose from menu on board instead. Otherwise the pre-order meal code will also get transferred over and cabin crew will think you want whatever the equivalent meal code is in F.
    (I pre-ordered the fish in CW prior to AUP, and in F that translated to pork)
  • B773 - Seat 3K - IMHO not too much different than Business class seat on AA 789 / QR 787/380 --- (Save your typing - not going to entertain a ping-pong discussion on my opinion, thanks!)
  • AA F (and CX F for that route) surely have more seat-area space than BA F.
  • Did I get a better sleep on BA 773 F 3K than on AA 773 C 3J? No.
  • Did I sleep better than I would have slept in BA 773 J 10B - very probably.
  • Concorde Room was a bit underwhelming. Private dining was cute, although food took very long (20+ mins) and then also the wrong dish arrived (ordered sea bass, got ox cheek)
  • First Lounge buffet the day before was very yummy - salt beef brisket with pickles ^ ^ ^ >> Concorde Room is not an influencer for me going forward (Again - my opinion)

Also to mention -
No matter what or who you do , getting an AUP the day before at LHR/LGW is a waste of time, it just won't happen.
Agents confirmed they could - but rules say it has to be at least 00:01AM on the day of departure from LHR/LGW before they can do an AUP
I popped by the F-Wing in T5 in the morning before work (was there 8am although flight left at 6.30pm, just to secure my AUP - yes I wanted to try F).
The evening before 3 seats were still open in F - and I indeed snatched the last seat by stopping by airport early.
Agent confirmed CW to F AUPs are much more popular than WT+ to CW AUPs, F almost always goes out full, CW not necessarily.

LAX-LHR 20/12/19 CW to F $1,070

Not taken as I was up in the bubble and had deliberately chosen CW for that reason and this was also an overnight flight.
