Mid-J 747 Refurbishments
In April 2018 BA announced that they had started a programme to refurbish the cabins on the Mid-J 747-400 fleet. In January 2020, this programme was completed.

As part of the refurbishment all of the aircraft involved have undergone a basic refresh which consisted of:

* Full aircraft deep clean
* Seats in WT/WTP refurbished with new seat foams and cushions as on Super Hi-J aircraft

9 of the aircraft received an ENHANCED refurbishment to bring the cabin up to the same standard as the Super Hi-J 747-400 fleet. This consisted of what is listed above plus:

* New carpets fitted throughout
* All curtains replaced
* New Panasonic IFE fitted in all classes

Note: It was initially believed that the enhanced refurbishment included LED mood lighting throughout, but this is not the case. All retained standard lighting. There were no plans to install WiFi to any Mid-J configured 747-400 aircraft.
Refurbishment Progress

I'm afraid it is doubtful that you will see any noticeable difference. The main refresh work seems to be in the Y and W cabins (new seat covers).

If it has been recently refreshed that includes a deep clean of the entire aircraft, which is a bonus.

I flew CIVD last week to CT and I can confirm that when travelling in First, there is little to no difference and a number of areas in the cabin still look 'well loved' and the Entertainment System is something out of the 90's. However, as I have not flown a 747 in first for a while, I did not think it was dirty so that could be an improvement I was unaware of?

I flew CIVC Upper Deck on 25/08 and funnily enough 27/08 and it's definitely not had a deep clean. It is pretty gross the condition of these birds

I was under the impression that the refurb and the deep clean are separate? I could be wrong.

Looking at the wiki above, CIVC is not listed as having been "refurbed" yet.

I can certainly confirm it has not! But the long hairs on my seat and flaked skin around the rim of the seat were delightful ! [exLHR]

From the appearance of G-CIVO on Monday, I think this aircraft has undergone a deep clean.

Have just checked its recent history on flightradar.com, but am not seeing that it has either paid a visit to Cardiff, or been out of action for a while.
How long does a deep clean take? Is this something that is only done at a maintenance facility, or can it be done at the aircraft's base?

They’re done at LHR. I believe during routine maintenance or when they’re at base overnight so shouldn’t be out of service as such. Could be mistaken on this though.

Deep cleans are separate to this mid-j 747 refresh.

All aircraft have had a deep clean, and are now on a target of once every 45 days. It just doesn't take long to get back in a poor state. There is a separate issue of improving the turnaround and overnight cleaning being addressed.

I saw on The BA Source that G-CIVO positioned LHR-CWL on the 7th Sep for maintenance so I'm hoping this is for it's refresh including new IFE as per the wiki? Can't wait for more of the mid-J's to be refreshed!

Flew back from Seattle in CW UD on CIVD the other week.

The cabins below J have definitely had a spruce up. Sadly the J cabin looked tired as ever.

As I've posted elsewhere, I flew to JFK 10 days ago on G-CIVE in F. It was gross, even down to dried in snot on the wing of the seat. And don't ask what I saw when I pulled the footstool down... I'm sorry I didn't check it advance that it wasn't a mid-J. Never again, nothing remotely premium about the cabin experience.

Just noticed a couple of errors in the wiki post when it comes to which aircraft registrations are to have the Panasonic IFE system fitted. The aircraft that are to receive the new IFE System are:

G-CIVA
G-CIVB
G-CIVC
G-CIVE
G-CIVK
G-CIVO
G-CIVP
G-CIVT
G-CIVU
