Mid-J 747 Refurbishments
In April 2018 BA announced that they had started a programme to refurbish the cabins on the Mid-J 747-400 fleet. In January 2020, this programme was completed.

As part of the refurbishment all of the aircraft involved have undergone a basic refresh which consisted of:

* Full aircraft deep clean
* Seats in WT/WTP refurbished with new seat foams and cushions as on Super Hi-J aircraft

9 of the aircraft received an ENHANCED refurbishment to bring the cabin up to the same standard as the Super Hi-J 747-400 fleet. This consisted of what is listed above plus:

* New carpets fitted throughout
* All curtains replaced
* New Panasonic IFE fitted in all classes

Note: It was initially believed that the enhanced refurbishment included LED mood lighting throughout, but this is not the case. All retained standard lighting. There were no plans to install WiFi to any Mid-J configured 747-400 aircraft.

Mid-J 747 Cabin Refresh

BA have started a program to refurbish the cabins on its 16 Mid-J 747’s. Each aircraft will undergo a deep clean and will be refurbished to the same standard as the Super Hi-J 747’s. Nine aircraft will also be upgraded with Panasonic IFE

The rolling programme of refreshment, will be aligned to the aircrafts' annual maintenance checks, will take place over the coming 18 months.

The first aircraft to be refurbished (G-CIVM) returned to service on 3rd of April.

About bloody time. I assume this means those 9 birds will be around for a few years yet. What routes do the mid J 744s fly on? How many will not be refurbished?

Mainly the T3 regulars; LAS, DEN, CPT, MIA etc etc

They tend to make a daily rotation on JFK too - I guess for the higher Y capacity ?

This is great news.

If anyone is wondering whether their flight will be operated by one of the refurbished aircraft, flightrader24 usually offers one or two days advanced info.

The link above is for BA293 but you can adjust the flight number at the end of the URL to match your corresponding flight no.

Same for JFK last week - G-CIVP - very poor indeed.

They certainly need it! I fly LHR/CPT quite a bit and the last time I did that trip I noticed there had been a huge decline all round. Didn't enjoy the trip at all. Dirty, falling apart, worn, terrible IFE. It would be very a very welcome refurbishment!

Thank you for the news - good to know that the first aircraft is now done.

Do you (or does anyone else) have the list of these aircraft that are due to receive the new IFE, please?

This is excellent news, and quite overdue IMO. If things pan out as planned, I should be on one of these very soon and can share some photos.

Why are only 9 being upgraded to better IFE? Are the others being retired very soon?

Is there a reason only 9 out of the 16 are getting the new IFE? Are 7 of them leaving the fleet within a few years?

Or, at any rate, sooner. I don't think it can be a coincidence that G-CIVM is almost the youngest mid-J aircraft and has received the new IFE.

The retirements wikipost has forthcoming planned dates for three aircraft, which equally unsurprisingly happen to be the three oldest. All the information is in the tracker post.
