Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Some information on how to use ITA matrix is in post #4 of this thread (or just click here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest along with UK domestic returns. Additionally you may find that trips in to mainland Europe require a one night stay whereas the cheapest domestic CE returns do not have any minimum stay so can be booked as a same day return. If doing a back to back AMS and JER can be easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround - more information can be found in the back to back thread listed in the forum dashboard. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). UK domestic route, Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seem the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post of this thread, MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports).

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520.
DUB-LHR-HEL return (or return to LHR) is currently a very efficient way of hitting 200-240 TPs

Whoops, yes indeed. My bad.

Not sure if you can still get an overnight free stay in DOH, incidentally but it's worth a look. I think they still have a truckload of hotel capacity there.

Yes you can, book by 28 Feb and stay before 30 Apr if I remember correctly. Hotel is free in either direction but only once per trip.

I'd like to say a big thank you to all of the guys that post on here. In this case to rossmacd and Karfa in particular for the OTP-PHX fare.
It took some playing with as i struggled with matrix and powertools etc. (I'm normally not great but ok, it might have been complicated by looking for first class and the I and A availability or it may have been me). In the end i did it old school using the UK AA site and going through the city pairs. When i tried to get from OTP-PHX in one day the fare was in excess of £4k, stopping on the way in either JFK or LAX was less than half of that. I got the transcon on the o/b sector but not on the return so my wife will have to make do with old fashioned AA domestic F from PHX-JFK. The price to return to LHR gave me a nosebleed so we will return to AMS 2 months later and use that as our positioning flight for our next adventure (which is a great tip i picked up from another post on FT).
I booked OTP-LHR-JFK-LAX-PHX-JFK-LHR-AMS for £1887pp. The first and last flights are CE, the rest are First (one transcon 321T, one BA hopefully 86J 744 and an AA 77W). This is a TP optimised holiday, not a run, but with 930TP (i think 80+210+210+40+140+210+40) all in F that were possible, good flight timings and gaps in the flights of 2-3 hours to enjoy the lounges without prolonging the journey too much, I'm delighted. Thanks again to everyone.

I'm trying to come up with a not-too-expensive run to the west coast of the USA (we have friends in SFO, but SAN, LAX, PHX are all of interest) for the first week in April. The earliest we (2 of us) can go is 31st March and we need to be back in the UK on 9th April at the latest (but earlier is fine). This is the best I've been able to come up with:

I couldn't get the return flights in F going via JFK, but it is available going SFO-LHR direct (two J legs earn more points, of course). It's a bit cheaper to do it all in J but the price difference to F was not too great. Does anyone have any ideas of how I could either lower the price or improve the TP return? Happy to start/finish most exEU places, but the nearer/cheaper to position to the better. I was hoping to avoid the OTP-PHX run because of the expense (no reward flights available on our dates) and time taken (we couldn't B2B because we'd have checked baggage) of positioning to OTP. Plus, I don't really like Bucharest , and while on our dates I can find it for £1,207pp in J, it shoots up to about £2,500 if I tried to do it in F.
Any ideas? Or should I suck it up and do OTP-PHX?

To try to secure F on the Transcon be prepared to take the less social flights e.g. early or late.

I don’t have time to look now but if nobody else does I will have a look later on. Obviously ex-OTP is more expensive but it earns more TPs even when taking into account added expense of positioning.

Long time lurker here on FT, but I owe everyone in this thread a BIG thanks for the info you guys have been posting about the PHX TP run! Just managed to book it for myself, flying out during the first week of August. Doing it over a long weekend, with a night in NYC and a night in PHX. Thank you! :-)

exOTP Advanced Purchase Fare BA ILN8T8S4 to PHX

Some information below on this advanced purchase OTP fare. I think this does cover multiple US destinations, but this is highlighted for PHX which is particularly cheap.

Note that there are currently two I class OTP-PHX fares at the moment,
- this one which is book by 4 February, only for travel by 31 August 2018, but £80 cheaper, and
- the ILN8C8S4 fare which is £80 more, has no end date for booking, and is not restricted to travel by 31 August, details posts here https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/29235640-post12.html

Routings via HEL are possible so: OTP-LHR-HEL-JFK-LAX-PHX-LAX-JFK-HEL-LHR-OTP. Also bear in mind LHR-OTP is a short haul + route so earns 80 TPs one way in J, so a simple OTP-LHR- JFK-LAX-PHX-LAX-JFK- LHR-OTP would earn 80+140+140+40+40+140+140+80=800 TP.

See this post from rossmacd which has a worked example of how to search for this fare using itamatrix https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/29240873-post36.html

The fare does cover travel dates up to 31 August 2018 only and has a ticket by date:

TICKETS MUST BE ISSUED ON/BEFORE 04 FEB 18.
Example price (price updated on 6 January):

OTP-PHX - £1,205

PERMITTED
01 JUL THROUGH 31 AUG OR
22 NOV THROUGH 30 NOV OR
18 DEC THROUGH 02 JAN OR
27 MAR THROUGH 11 APR
SEASON IS BASED ON TRIP DATE..
This one is only for travel up to the end of August:

VALID FOR TRAVEL COMMENCING ON/BEFORE 31 AUG 18.
TRAVEL FROM INBOUND TRANSATLANTIC SECTOR MUST COMMENCE NO EARLIER THAN THE FIRST SUN AFTER DEPARTURE OF THE OUTBOUND TRANSATLANTIC SECTOR.
This allows positioning for your inbound TATL prior to the Sunday. You can therefore set off from PHX on Saturday arriving in to NYC during Saturday, have a night in NYC night, and then do your TATL on Sunday.

CONFIRMED RESERVATIONS FOR ALL SECTORS ARE REQUIRED AT LEAST 28 DAYS BEFORE DEPARTURE.
2 TRANSFERS PERMITTED IN EACH DIRECTION FREE
So 2 transfers in Europe and 2 transfers in the US each way. An overnight connection of up to 24 hrs between flights would be counted as a transfer, anything beyond that would be a stopover.

STOPOVERS NOT PERMITTED ON THE FARE COMPONENT.

Nothing new for OTP-PHX before anyone gets too excited, only just realised there are two current I class OTP-PHX fares so just adding the details of the slightly cheaper but more limited one above. Links to both fares are in the wiki.

Have added an interesting one to the wiki - DUB-LHR-HEL/HEL-LHR. 200TPs for £374, can leave DUB on Saturday lunchtime and return Sunday evening. Only £38 more for straight LHR-HEL return, but obviously 40 fewer TPS (and a schlep across London for those of us in the east - much more sensible to use LCY for positioning flight!). Can’t see an end date, just a good advance purchase fare it seems

with IHG pointsbreaks having a few Helsinki options it can be quite cost effective, or use it as an opportunity to hit the brand / country targets for IHG Accelerate

Can you get the AY A350 for this price or does it only work on BA metal?

Thanks, interesting fare.

DUB-LHR-HEL-LHR would be 200 TPs, with a Saturday night in HEL I can see it for £375
DUB-LHR-HEL-LHR-DUB would be 240 TPs, with a Saturday night in HEL I can see it for £403
DUB-LHR-HEL-LHR-MAN also 240 TPs, with a Saturday night in HEL i can see it for £429

I think the BA codeshares on AY operated LHR-HEL flights are excluded as they would be in the BA6XXX range.

Can’t see an end date, just a good advance purchase fare it seems

with IHG pointsbreaks having a few Helsinki options it can be quite cost effective, or use it as an opportunity to hit the brand / country targets for IHG Accelerate
Thanks for this, seems to be same price HEL-LHR-DUB return.

Fantastic!

If you add your flight details to the PHX mini do thread, you'll probably find you could meet up with others along the way
