Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Some information on how to use ITA matrix is in post #4 of this thread (or just click here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest along with UK domestic returns. Additionally you may find that trips in to mainland Europe require a one night stay whereas the cheapest domestic CE returns do not have any minimum stay so can be booked as a same day return. If doing a back to back AMS and JER can be easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround - more information can be found in the back to back thread listed in the forum dashboard. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). UK domestic route, Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seem the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post of this thread, MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports).

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520.
DUB-LHR-HEL return (or return to LHR) is currently a very efficient way of hitting 200-240 TPs

Even if I had booked back to back, I don’t see how the point made is true: the flight to BOS originated in Amsterdam. My one way trip to AMS would be a separate ticket regardless, would it not? Even if the outbound had been cancelled, the new flight wouldn’t be cancelled.

City to Rotterdam the next morning at 7.45 was no good because I’d have missed my flight from AMS to LHR at 7.45.

If you booked a back to back, and if your outbound LHR-AMS was cancelled, it follows that your first leg AMS-LHR would also be cancelled. Therefore rebooking of the exEU booking itself would be necessary (unlike in your case where it was not) and under such circumstances it does seem BA often may be amenable to rebooking the exEU starting in LHR which would have solved your problem.

If you don't do a b2b you end up in the situation you found yourself in where your LHR-AMS and AMS-LHR were unlrelated so delay or cancellation of the former doesn't mean delay or cancellation of the later,

Having spent an hour on the phone with BA I just don’t think what you say is true. Even if they had been back to back they were two separate tickets and it makes no difference. They could not have been more helpful on the phone but they were very clear that the fare rules meant the ticket had to originate in Amsterdam and if I did not present there to take the flight, regardless of the reason, the ticket would automatically cancel. I don’t work for BA I am simply reporting for others benefit what I found out. Based on that I do not believe it would have made any difference if I had flown the same day. It would have had to be a different ticket.

What KARFA and nuffnuff77 are saying is that if you had b2bed, the cancelled aircraft for LHR-AMS would not physically be in AMS for your first exEU leg AMS-LHR, which would then logically also be cancelled. With both tickets now affected by cancellation, both would be flexible to changes.

Two tickets, but one plane is the saving motto I think. The idea is that Ticket 1 from LHR to AMS flies on plane 1. Ticket 2 from AMS back to LHR (and then onwards elsewhere) is also scheduled on plane 1.

If Ticket 1 is cancelled because plane 1 is cancelled, then plane 1 does not fly to AMS. THEREFORE, Ticket 2 must also be rescheduled because there is no physical plane at AMS to fly to LHR. Plane 1 never made it to AMS so cannot depart from AMS, so your entire Ticket 2 itinerary is disrupted.

Hence, the perverse rule that a b2b saves your ENTIRE itinerary.

Do we have lots of examples on the board of BA allowing starting at LON when (say) AMS-LON is cancelled? I’m assuming BA are still within their rights to force the start at AMS?

there are a few over the years, even some this year I think. Certainly not something you can rely on, but when it does happen hopefully you can use your charm to persuade an agent of a pragmatic approach. I think generally this seems to be done at the airport. The call centres may well give you the “party line” but as we know agents at the airport have much more latitude to do things for you regarding rebooking.

When was the AMS service cancelled?
I'm not experienced as the others, but I would have thought that a scheduled departure from LHR of 6PM the day before could leave enough time to find alternatives, from flying to CDG/BRU/DUS even on other airlines, or use the eurostar, and then going with a rental car or a taxi to AMS in time for the morning departure. I think would have been cheaper anyway than a lost trip and a new ticket.

I think that key issue here. As referenced by KARFA is that the phone agents have less cope than those at the airport. I think the OP may well have received a more favourable response at the airport.

I can confirm good-will handling with a B2B ticket from an experience last year. We were in the LHR lounge waiting for our LHR-INV with a B2B connection INV-LHR-HEL... LHR-INV was delayed and so was INV-LHR with no chance to catch the LHR-HEL. The agent in the gold lounge changed our tickets and we were allowed to start our journey from LHR without the need to fly the INV route. Hope this helps.

I've been allowed to start ex-LHR quite a few times over the years for various reasons; cancellations, route suspension, etc. Does happen, but of course you can't bank on it.

In OP's scenario, assuming there's no chance of booking a last minute flight on another airline (surely KLM or someone had a seat that evening?), I'd have made a run for the Eurostar I think. Same day one way tickets to AMS are generally £200.

Hi all!
Does anyone know if there have been any changes in the TP earned in PE short haul, at least in Cathay Pacific?
I'm flying CX (BCN-)HKG-KIX /// NRT-HKG(-MAD) in PE. According to the BA TP table in OP I should collect 100 TP for each intercontinental sector and 30 TPs for each regional sector, but according to the BA Avios and TP calculator I'll only earn 25 TP per regional sector. Which should I trust, the table or the calculator?
Thanks!
