Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. The guide to using ITA matrix in post #4 (see here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520. Also the BA fare for LHR-HEL-TLL at ~£235 is still available and would get 200 TPs for a return.

If you can get First (A class) flying JFK - LAX it gets you 210 TPs rather than 140 TPs. In my experience it seems to happen mainly with BA codeshares. Therefore a journey DUB - LHR - JFK - LAX - HNL gets 1,020 return. Last week I booked this route for next July 2018 at £1.8K - more expensive, but some more TPs too....

(that'll teach me to have my lunch whilst reading - what teledude said :-) )

What do you usually say to customs/immigration agents when doing TP runs? Is it common enough that they will know about it or does it cause extra hassle?

While I'm out there, looking to do a run from LAS for around 300-400 TPs. There used to be good fares to a few places but have these all dried up now?

If your asked ALWAYS be 100% honest with officials and say you are on a mileage run to keep/achieve your airline status as well as having a little holiday. I always add that I am a little bit of an aviation enthusiast and I've never been subject to more than a few cursory questions.

Immigration and Customs staff, in my own personal experiences anyhow, in places like JFK, LAX and as well as the Far East etc are used to mileage runners.

I received this earlier and it may be of interest to TP runners to keep an eye out for deals. It's already on the QR forum but I thought I'd post it here too.

Our amazing collection of irresistible offers is about to be revealed.

Check qatarairways.com tomorrow for more details.

Sincerely,
Privilege Club

I once got a strange look from the connections security at DUB as to why I'd just arrived from LHR and was heading straight back there.

I was about to say it was a TP run when the security guy in the opposite booth jumped in and said it was to get 'the cheap tickets' - I nodded and smiled as he waved me through. This was back in the good old days of DUB->HNL for about £1000 and 1200TP so I guess they'd seen a lot of us.

Agreed. Be honest that you've bought a cheap ticket to maintain/increase your status and wanted to visit somewhere you've not been before. I gave this as my explanation to further questioning in a second 'interview' in the US pre-clearance DUB (my first reason for visiting was for holiday). I got a look of you're a bit weird from the woman but if you can show you have hotels booked and flights in business/first it shouldn't be an issue.

I need 30 tier points to maintain status by Jan 08th, and I'd like to get this as cheaply as possible. Any ideas? I can see STN-TXL in CE one way is £122, not a bad price but anything cheaper?

I just flew ex CAI to LAS via LHR, was stopped at LHR gate by American immigration and had to explain to him for 10 mins why I started in CAI and showed him the price difference along with my EDI - CAI positioning flights. He said he'd update the system but I'd be flagged when I arrived.

On arriving in LAS, sure enough got secondary screening, but it only took 5-10 mins again and again showed my all my flights and the costs and everything was fine.

The best thing to do is have a print off of itineraries, I didn't, so had to show everything on my phone which slowed things down a bit.

Good tip

@ my bolding - call me old fashioned but I still to this day take a paper itinerary with me.

There really is nothing for anyone to fear or be apprehensive about and once you've explained the cheaper flights, TP's etc and see you're also a fan of flying the all is well!

It mostly induces pity.

"Why do you keep going to Colombia?"
"Err ... bit embarrassing ... mileage run"
"oh for god's sake, carry on"

"You've got a long journey ahead of you, Honolulu?"
"Erm, yes, it's actually a mileage run"
"Oh. Is it really worth it?"
