Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. The guide to using ITA matrix in post #4 (see here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520. Also the BA fare for LHR-HEL-TLL at ~£235 is still available and would get 200 TPs for a return.

I already have a multi-entry Chinese visa (as I now live in Hong Kong) so actually I will be doing a weekend there (it's a nice city, I've been there before), so the following is my most likely routing, which takes it out of TP run economics but will be more convenient for me and my wife:

VCE-LCY//LHR-HKG//HKG-CTU-HKG//HKG-LHR-VCE
40+140+40+40+140+40 = 440TPs

So the fare goes up from £1100 (£2.50/TP) to nearer £1500 (£3.40/TP) including APD and a stopover fee, but in return I get:
  1. A stopover in London, that I needed anyway (my outbound is HKG-LHR-BRI)
  2. A direct flight out of London on Friday night (Saturday would have been better but I can't seem to get an I class fare on this ticket), rather than having another positioning flight to ex-EU (e.g. Hamburg)
  3. A weekend in Chengdu for about £100 a few months later, outbound on Friday, inbound on Sunday. Those living in HKG know that even an economy return on CX/KA is going to be more than this
  4. And then my return to Europe that I wanted for Christmas

I could have done an overnight turn-around in CTU to remove the stopover fee and bring it back into TP run territory (don't think a back-to-back can work as the flight arrives around 10pm, and not convinced you can sleep at CTU airport), but thought I'd just take the extra holiday opportunity and cost. The APD can be removed, but you need to take another day off work and end up with a long wait in LHR from VCE, other cities are better.

Anyone else looking into this fare, which is on the Premium Fares thread, it also works from PSA,LIN,MXP and potentially other Italian cities:

Edit: To confirm that I booked this fare via Propeller Travel, efficienct as always. With the extra APD and stopover fee it did move from TP run territory, but was a relatively painless way to bump my TPS up towards my gold renewal.

Also, you need 600 TPs to get to Silver, so if you already have 265 then you need another 335, not 225.
My apologies, you're correct. My tier ends on the 08th June, my card on the 31st July.

I'll have 265 points at the end of my next trip, on the 18th May. Again, you're correct with the total i'd need. I completely misread it.

Thanks.

This is correct - the "24 hour" version also requires flying in from and out to different countries. As such the "PSA-LHR-HKG-CTU-PVG-LHR-VCE" variant of this fare (also given in the Premium Fares thread) could in theory work for TWOV - but only if the total time between arrival in Chengdu and departure at PVG to LHR is less than 24 hours (as the PVG flight leaves at 11:00, then you would need to have a flight landing in CTU later than 11:00 the day before PVG-LHR).

Great educational thread.
I'm Silver, earning year ends June 8th. I won't have many TPs. But starting the new earning year June 9th, I want to get Silver again if possible.

Ex- South America?
I will be in South America in July-- any TP runs there from EZE/GRU/GIG? Business Class fares ex-South America are obscenely expensive.

Ex- South Africa?
One alternative I have is using UA miles GRU-JNB/DUR/CPT, then going from there. I like that I could get my 4 BA flights using the BA South Africa (Comair) flights....
Thanks for any ideas!

I presume from your name you may be based in HKG.

Having worked out, with the exception of the QR once-a-year super January sale it is way cheaper/easier for me to have an ex-EU ticket booked than trying to book a ticket out of HKG (even if I start in TPE/MNL/BKK), so I always tend to leave a hanging ticket. So in this case I did a GUV'd paid ex-EU ticket in business that left Europe over Christmas (to CTU as it happens as well, though in that case I went to Tibet), and the return leg goes to BRI in June. As such I'll do the same again to nearly the same cities. This gives me two return trips to Europe.

I am also on holiday/working though, so will have 4- days to get from BRI to VCE and will likely do train to get around Italy as it's pleasant enough.

I do like CX, but since I can get a BA F ticket (with my GUV) for less than a CX business ticket and it's just about better. Amusingly I just went to NGO for a week and paid almost the same price for a business ticket as I will to get to Europe!

Any help or advice on a potential Mileage Run in the US?

Hi all,

I'm still fairly new to this so my apologies if I'm asking silly questions.

I'm BAEC Silver and my next collection year starts on 9 May 2017.

I'll be in the U.S. in June for a conference. Annoyingly, my boss was in a bad mood when the flight had to be booked and instead of allowing me to book WTP+ or J and claim the Y fare on expenses (like I had done many times before), she insisted on booking the ticket using her CC and said "you can always upgrade later". As much as I tried to explain the problems (and much higher cost) associated with that, she wasn't having any of it so I'll be flying in Y from LHR to IAD on BA0293 on 7 June 2017 and from IAD to LHR on BA0292 on 14 June 2017. (rant over)

While I'll try for an AUP, I thought I'll see if I can at least go on a mileage run while in the U.S.

As I mentioned earlier, I'll be arriving on BA0293 on 7 June 2017.

I have a hotel in D.C. from 10 June 2017 and no plans between my arrival and 10 June 2017. It also wouldn't be a problem if I didn't arrive back in D.C. until 11 June 2017.

To sum this up:
Departure Airport: WAS
Miles Needed: as many as I can get (focus being Tier Points)
Required Spend or Budget: $500-1000 - depending on what I can get out of it
Available Travel Dates: 7 June 2017 - 10 or 11 June 2017
Required Metal or Codeshares okay: yes, Oneworld

Thanks for all your help!

Philip

I'm having trouble sorting out an ex-DUB TP run to the west coast in August. Last year I did the whole HNL thing for around £1500, this year I can do a simple DUB-JFK for about £1300, but adding LAX takes the price up to £2000, with a couple of bad caveats (no direct LAX-JFK or vice versa, direct JFK-DUB return instead of via LHR). Can anyone suggest a way that I can do the whole coast to coast thing, get 600 TPs or thereabouts, without spending the £7k it seems to be costing to do this in August using all the best flights???

The £1300-1400 price range fares to LAX are no longer. There's been quite an increase over last year. See the Wiki at the top of the page - more like €1795 for these dates:

19 March through 12 April or
25 June through 22 August or
23 November through 30 November or
18 December through 04 January
for each transatlantic sector.

Note the new restriction this year also regarding all transatlantic sectors.

For £1300-1400 pricing to HNL you have to start from CAI.....

To be honest if just for 600 TP's you could just do a couple of OSL-HEL-AGP runs....

I'm at SJU right now and it's like you're at a completely different airport. Much more clean and modern now. Busy as well.

Oddly quiet round these parts... not sure why.

Posted over at the Premium Fare Deals ...

MH KUL-PER in J . 2 x 140 TPs for £410 or £1.46 / TP

Usual trick of add on departure from PEN or some other domestic airport for an extra 2 x 40 TPs, total 360 TPs for £442 or £1.23 / TP

Could I ask one more question please. Why will the fare ILN8R4C1 not quote with a BA887 connecting next day to either of AY832 or AA9000 or BA6032 ?. The Rule covering travel within Europe seems to allow any AA flight operated by AY (AA9000), Any Ay flight operated by AY (AY832)and any Ba flight operated by AY. Will only let me connect BA887 to AA6538 or AA6463.

Codeshare flights AA9000 & AA8999 do not show up in Expertflyer as LHR/HEl/HEL sectors yet you can book AA8999 as part of the HEL to PHX sector

A bit of jiggery pokery has seen me get DUB-LHR-NYC-LAX and back for just over £1500 over the summer. I'm guessing this is as good as it's going to get, unless anyone can give me the fast track to a cheaper way? This is also just a 4-day trip, so pretty full on and no lengthy stopovers anywhere - which suits me fine.

Looks to be about £1,330 ARN-LAX if that's any good? Price seems to go up on Google Flights then back down when you complete through to AA..
