UPDATED FOR 15 NOVEMBER 2016: BA will no longer accept interlining on BA-BA separate tickets / PNRs.

From 1 June 2016, the oneworld policy on accepting customers travelling on separate tickets was changed. BA, along with some other oneworld partners, has implemented this change in policy which is as follows:
Only those customers that have separate tickets issued in the same PNR/booking will be accepted for through check-in. Furthermore all sectors must be BA / oneworld / other carrier, but BA to/fron Vueling is specifically NOT allowed even on the same ticket. Aer Lingus is not specified but some be covered by "other carrier".

A PNR is a wrapper, and it can have several tickets, and other items such as hotels, in one PNR, so long as it was built that way at the time of purchase. Another (new) ticket can be inserted into an existing PNR after purchase, it is easiest to do this at a BA airport, and there is a small fee for doing this (£15 in the UK). However you cannot merge 2 existing PNRs into one PNR - once a reservation has reached ticketed status it can't be moved. If you have 2 PNRs you need to allow time to collect and re-check any bags at the transfer airport.

There is one exception: BA to BA transfers, on 2 PNRs, are allowed. See post 643 for details.

No, I did not misunderstood the table. The terminology used by ET is not 100% accurate. What you said 'transferring from different airline [on a through fare]' is 'INTERLINE'. I am trying to tell you booking two separate ticket is a transfer, which would be considered as part of offline transit.

IATA definition of Interline Transfer is:

Transfer from the service of one carrier to the service of another carrier.
Also you are right about Online Transfer, IATA definition is:

Transfer from the service of one carrier to another service of the same carrier.
However, I can not trace the definition of offline transfers. My speculation is that IATA only consider a transfer as 'online' or 'interline'. But then again, in IATA airport planning manual regarding airport passenger and service, it used the term of 'online' and 'offline' transfer passengers.

The only definition (unoffcial) provided on offline transfer is from Skyscanner, so it may not be a good source. But it states
Offline connection –
a journey where the passenger travels on multiple planes using multiple airlines
Notice how this definition does not state offline transfer needs to be on the same ticket. And that is how I remembered from my IATA training many years ago. I remember that transit/transfer would have people holding the same ticket, or different ticket; transit/transfer from one airline to other airline or within the same airline. For a transfer, or transit, passenger DOES NOT NEED TO HAVE A THROUGH TICKET!! At least IATA does not put the 'same ticket' restriction on definition of a transfer/transit. Thus MCT is not restricted to through ticket. Of course, some airports would add restriction because they do not have a connection station that is capable to retrieve luggage and retag for you, like those you can see in Hong Kong and Singapore. but from a IATA point of view, MCT applies to all transfer and transit including self connections.

And we can have a look at how airport counts passengers in terms of O&D or transit. For example, when you fly from Hong Kong, and took the ferry from Macau or Pearl Delta area, you bought two separate tickets, but you are a 'transfer passenger' via Sky Pier. And you will be refunded the departure tax. You are effectively an offline transfer passenger, but not interline passenger, yet in most cases, your suitcases is automatically transferred to your Hong Kong departure aircraft.

Again, I am not touching the idea whether the passengers should be protected in case of delay or misconnect. That is up to individual airline. I am here just to say that self connect is not outlawed, and some airports actually helps self connecting passengers (e.g. Milan, Singapore and Hong Kong, and now even Gatwick). If anyone has the IATA or ICAO definition of 'offline transfer' please kindly let me know. My training on this was long time ago and I did not keep up. So please forgive me if I had given some wrong info. Memory is not in full capacity nowadays.

As one of the resident pensioners on this forum I'm not convinced my memory is at full capacity either, so welcome to a not very exclusive but well respected club. However unless I'm much mistaken, online transfers is the same as intraline transfers, within an aviation company; whereas offline is another way of saying "interline" transfers, across companies. The wording of intraline and interline causes a lot of problems despite their long heritage, hence in more recent times the move to use the phrase online and offline, the line being airline. It is certainly clearer for non native English speakers. But I'm pretty certain that MCT, in any version, can only occur with one or more tickets but within one PNR. If you have 2 PNRs you don't have MCT.

Tbh none of what I wrote was based on what was on the ET site so whether it is accrurate or not wasn't really a factor for my post.

Again I think you are confusing the fact that at some airports there are transfer channels which you can use whether on one ticket or separate tickets if you already have a bp and no luggage issues, and MCT which relates to formally bookable connections on one booking. Just because you can do one doesn't mean it has any relation to the other.

OFFLINE MCT is not some kind of MCT for separate tickets/bookings I am afraid.

Btw, interestingly the GatwickConnect+ service is only bookable if you have at least 2 hours between flights (which can be on separate tickets).

Anyway, we seem to be disappearing down a rabbit hole of technical definitions which I suspect no one reading cares about, so I will leave it there

Did you notice the line for offline which I highlighted? That is if you have 2 separate ticket and need to recheck in transfer counters. I think among the airport I have visited, Singapore, Bangkok, JNB. Kuwait and some others all offered this offline transfer facility. Also VIA MILANO is an excellent example of how airport help people with separate tickets on transit.

Here there is one website has some major offline and online transfer MCT in its website if you have no access of KVS or Expertflyer:



So the practise is there and very up-to-date. Please notice the narrow definition of offline transfer used by ET is 'destination flies in connection to other carriers', this includes airports that through check luggage is not possible and may require check-in at transfer counters or departure hall due to interline agreement and facility restrictions. For example, Hangzhou in this list. My memory serves me that you need to pick up your bag and go to departure hall to check-in again. I could be wrong but again, from my personal experience, there are many airports do help people with separate tickets.
I called CX reservations to ask about offline MCTs and if you have separate bookings and one flight is late arriving into HKG what would happen. I was advised that MCT is only applicable on through tickets and if you have a CX HGK originating ticket and you don’t check in ontime you will be classed as a no show, Depending on the fare you might be able to rescue the booking/sector if not you will need to purchase a new ticket should you still wish to travel.

This is the full MCT table for LGW. However, unless you can get BA and FR on one booking (there is a challenge for you!) none of them apply. Also note that there are no specific entries for FR since FR don't do connections.

Just to add there is an airport run GatwickConnects service which I mentioned a few posts back, and this will provide support for separate tickets if there is 2 hours or more between them. BA do participate, but FR don't so you wouldn't be able to use it when going between a BA and FR flight at LGW.

Reading the FAQ, the support only kicks in if you booked both tickets via their special booking service. I assume there's an additional cost.

Still feel that all these additional rules are counter productive/intuitive. When I'm sober I will try and post my experiences of working in hotel res where actually doing what the customer wanted saved so much time and energy compared to enforcing artificial rules.

Just to report back on this scenario. Checking in with KLM which is connecting to a BA flight, KLM was happy to check through the bag to the BA flight without any questions.

When looking at the booking in both BA and KLM websites, they can see each other's flights.

The return will be checking in with BA connecting to KLM - will report back later how that goes.

It would seem to me that the moral of this story is that when doing an ex-EU, if you know your positioning flights, it can be worth using a travel agent.

Just curious, are the TA fares the sum of the parts?

If yes, what I said in https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/30584528-post132.html is wrong, it's not airlines trying to stop travellers avoiding married segment fares.

It was over a year ago that I did this, but I checked two bags in for the route TPE - HKG - LHR - AMS - BSL, with AMS-BSL on KLM. The rest were all bought through BA although as the TPE-HKG flight was on Cathay so that's whose check-in desk I used at TPE.

Interestingly, I checked in two bags (1x30Kg, 1x20Kg) and was worried as the AMS-BSL flight was KLM economy, but it proved no issue.

I got an sms while in AMS saying my bags didn't make the LHR-AMS flight despite having a 5 hour transit at LHR. I did try to get both BA and KLM to send the bag from LHR to BSL (in which case it could have beaten me as I had another 5 hour transit at AMS!) but they said the bag had to fly the original route. I got them the next day. The bags were quite heavy so having them couriered to me saved me the hassle of getting them to my place from the airport in BSL.
