UPDATED FOR 15 NOVEMBER 2016: BA will no longer accept interlining on BA-BA separate tickets / PNRs.

From 1 June 2016, the oneworld policy on accepting customers travelling on separate tickets was changed. BA, along with some other oneworld partners, has implemented this change in policy which is as follows:
Only those customers that have separate tickets issued in the same PNR/booking will be accepted for through check-in. Furthermore all sectors must be BA / oneworld / other carrier, but BA to/fron Vueling is specifically NOT allowed even on the same ticket. Aer Lingus is not specified but some be covered by "other carrier".

A PNR is a wrapper, and it can have several tickets, and other items such as hotels, in one PNR, so long as it was built that way at the time of purchase. Another (new) ticket can be inserted into an existing PNR after purchase, it is easiest to do this at a BA airport, and there is a small fee for doing this (£15 in the UK). However you cannot merge 2 existing PNRs into one PNR - once a reservation has reached ticketed status it can't be moved. If you have 2 PNRs you need to allow time to collect and re-check any bags at the transfer airport.

There is one exception: BA to BA transfers, on 2 PNRs, are allowed. See post 643 for details.

They can't link the tickets but if there is availability you can add the BCN sector and delete the separate booking. Both transactions may result in amendment and redeposit charges.

AA said no today when I enquired about checking my bag from SFO-LAX and then LAX-LHR on separate tickets.

Oh well, just going to spend my time drinking and stuffing myself to the point of no return

Suppose I could go downstairs and check my bag in and reclear security, but I can't be bothered now.

Thanks. I checked availability and then called. All done. It cost $$, but we have an earlier flight to BCN, and it is all on one ticket.

Lesson learned.

Anyone got any experience on interlining bags between two BA flights when the bookings have been "linked" together via BA Gold telephone helpline?

I always link bookings like this which means check in agents can see whole itinerary.

Does anyone know if this makes it more likely for them to check the bags straight through?

Thanks

AA have the same policy as BA. There is a very long thread on the AA board on this very subject.

It was worth a try regardless. It's not really putting me out although got some loud American having the standard business conversation in one ear and someone blabbering on in French in the other.

no difference. The use of the term linking is misleading, all that is done is that one booking reference is noted in the other nothing more. You need to plan on the basis of bags not being checked through since that is ba’s explicit policy.

Avios bookings can be changed so there is no problem there.
Indeed, very good way to get around the "problem". Thank you! ^

But did you not have to pay the change fee each time? That is what I was required to do today when I amended the original booking to add the BCN flight on the same ticket. We are lowly Blues so have no status perks. It cost $110 to change the booking, but I was willing to pay that to avoid the baggage check problem. It was cheaper than losing my trekking poles and buying new ones in Spain.

Not a good argument given that JL, QR, and CX have all backtracked on their no-interlining policies.

Also, note that we are approaching 2,000 posts and 300,000 thread views, in case some people are really still trying to diminish the impact of this stupid policy.

Happy to proved wrong but I can’t find any reference to offline minimum connection times hence my request to be pointed to such sources. Indeed as posted up thread at Heathrow there is no such thing as connecting passengers on two separate tickets. A cursory look at some major carriers websites on check in indicates that if you don’t check in on time you most likely won’t get to travel..there is no reference excepting passengers with offline minimum connecting times.

The only thing that I can see which remotely comes close to this is the Gatwick Connect product that they launched in 2013 to encourage people to change planes there. This assists with check in and makes the process slightly easier if you buy the tickets through them, They offer a Connect Protect product where the airport will cover the additional expenses of a missed departure.

Conscious this is taking this topic off thread as BA don’t/shouldn’t through check bags on separate tickets so not sure if a separate thread needs to be created and moved to there,

FWIW I think it’s a bit naff that airlines don’t offer this inter alliance or on their own metal especially where reward flights and revenue flights can’t be combined. I’ve been lucky that AA did it for me but it wouldn’t have made a major issue had they not as I could have reclaimed my bag in Dublin gone through customs to the check in desk and deposited it for London City.

Did you notice the line for offline which I highlighted? That is if you have 2 separate ticket and need to recheck in transfer counters. I think among the airport I have visited, Singapore, Bangkok, JNB. Kuwait and some others all offered this offline transfer facility. Also VIA MILANO is an excellent example of how airport help people with separate tickets on transit.

Here there is one website has some major offline and online transfer MCT in its website if you have no access of KVS or Expertflyer:

So the practise is there and very up-to-date. Please notice the narrow definition of offline transfer used by ET is 'destination flies in connection to other carriers', this includes airports that through check luggage is not possible and may require check-in at transfer counters or departure hall due to interline agreement and facility restrictions. For example, Hangzhou in this list. My memory serves me that you need to pick up your bag and go to departure hall to check-in again. I could be wrong but again, from my personal experience, there are many airports do help people with separate tickets.

.
I think you have misunderstood the tables. Offline and online means transferring from the same (online) or different airlines (offline). Both are when on the same ticket/booking though. Offline is not a MCT for completely separate tickets/bookings.

As has been noted many times before on the board, MCT is completely irrelevant when connecting between separate bookings and you needed to leave enough time to do any security/immigration/bag claim/check in as needed as well as some padding to allow for the usual possible delays. This is because in most situations if you miss your onward flight the airline has no responsibility to help you.

Did you notice the definition of offline at the bottom?

It isn't what you state - it means transfer to another airline not separate tickets....
