Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

As usual, I need to make my homage and return to the Bay Area for my summer holidays. Just checked Ex-EU from Dublin to SFO and found great TP runs on BA.com

DUB-PHL-SFO-PHL-DUB on US Airways in I class for €1,651.00 (£1198). The good thing is that PHL - SFO will get you 140TP

£2.19 TP | £1198 or €1,651.00| 560 TPs | DUB-PHL-SFO-PHL-DUB | I/I/I/I | LDNConsultant | BA.com

I think PHL-SFO would actually get you 210 TPs if you booked it under the AA/US flight numbers on a two class aircraft - it should book in to A class. I suspect if this is over the summer it is the exDUB ILV7EUS sale as I noted above.

I don't know if this has been written before, but at HEL they have installed some nice "sleeping pods" near gate 37. These should turn out useful if you can't find a back-to-back and need to overnight instead.

Just to add, they're 9€ an hour to use and an attendant will provide you with a pillow and a blanket.

Oh, I didn't spot that. Though when I arrived at 11.35 PM I didn't see anyone around that looked like an employee wanting to charge for them, and they were all open.

Unfortunately due to US restrictions it appears that ITA Matrix won't work for HAV, which is really impacting my searches. Google flights does appear to work, but only from some cities/countries, and clearly building some complex routes there is a challenge.

As far as I know only IB and LAN fly there from oneworld. The "best" fare I've managed to find is then BCN-MAD-HAV-MAD-BCN for ~£1400/€1900. As it only appears to be available on the Iberia website I can't find the fare rules and work out whether this is even a sale fare, or just the standard one (in which case I should wait for a sale).
  • Anyone able to help me think how to explore routes/fares or force a Lima stopover without ITA?
  • Does ExpertFlyer support Havana to be worth using a trial subscription?
  • Are there any good travel agent sites that may work?

I got a super bargain £1220 pp ex PAR, booked in February. The fare basis is IOESPFR.

As you mentioned none of it is ITAable - I was playing with various EU start points and PAR was by far the cheapest. I booked with IB over the phone - took ages - the very friendly agent commented that the price looked incorrect.

You're going to struggle with a TP run - nothing from mainland US apart from charters and going as far South as LIM might well break some fare rules. Saying that I remember a thread where people were using HAV as a stopover to South America - so search this thread.

Good luck!

I need about 140 points in the next month, what would be the best route ex LON that someone could recommend and how do you find them? I found a LGW-MAD-BIO-MAD-LHR for £230 but the flight times were treadmill with 12 hour stop over on all three flights!

£223

for about £20 more you can leave from LHR and have a better return flight.

unable to book for second time!

So I put together an itinerary for "gold in a single trip" back in April before the end of the IL28SALE - dub-hel-lhr/lcy-jfk-phx-hnl and reverse for 750 TP each way.

I was planning to fly it the day after my TP year expired and get a head start on new status, but when I called BA back in April reservations were unable to get the ticket I wanted to price at the IL28SALE price no matter what they tried and were always quoting a figure of multiples of the expected fare.

I spent several hours and even tried HUACA but to no avail.

Fast forward a few months and following the April 28th changes and the demise of the babybus advantage I'm putting together a slightly 'saner' dub-lhr-jfk-phx-hnl//hnl-lax-iad-lhr-dub itinerary.

This priced on matrix to €1,747 and all seemed OK until I called the reservations line and ran into the same problem.

The lady was unable to get the P class (A was not available) on the PHX-HNL leg to 'be included' in the ILV7EUS price.

I'm tearing my hair out now and am really starting to wonder how to book these complex itineraries if spoonfeeding the ITA flights to reservations does not work, but I have an inkling that I have worked out the cause.

The lady in Reservations created the itinerary for me and "sent it to the rate team" - she gave me a booking reference so I could call back tomorrow to see if there was any update.

I immediately called this up on amadeus and noticed that the itinerary there seems to be for DUB-LAX (via HNL) and return rather than being DUB-HNL.
(I was doing an immediate turnaround in HNL and would only be there a few hours.)

Is it possible that this is what is causing my problem or can anyone shed any light or provide me with any pointers?

Thanks in advance

Can you not book it online at aa.com?

I must admit I have always managed to get exEU itineries priced up and booked with BA on the phone. Sorry you seem to be having a lot of bad luck doing so.

Another thought I had catharsis, if you want to list the itinerary someone can check if there is a booking class availability issue with one of the flights.

You need to get the agent to make 1000% sure that the Point Of Sale is set to Ireland, and not London.

On a recent booking I made from OSL-Australia, the LHR-SIN segment only had C availability, but I was seeing I on ITA. It took us a good few minutes to work out that the casue was her system had to POS set to London and not Oslo. Lo and behold as soon as that changed the I availability appeared on the flight.
