Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

Just booked CPH to BKK in the summer via DOH for exactly £850 each as part of a time for one sale. 540 TP £1.57 a TP for somewhere we were going to anyhow.

Lucky enough to grab 2h connections in DOH and will be using a combo of the 787 (new one for me) and the A380

Living in Brighton we also found positioning flights on EZ from LGW just over £50.

Happy days

I have read previously on the forum about how old the AA/US planes flying to and from PHX and HNL are, but I was not prepared for how uncomfortable they were even in First Class. The AA planes had very good legroom, to be fair, but absolutely no lumbar support. The US planes had surprisingly little legroom though the seats had better back support. Neither reclined very far. One of my flights (HNL-LAX) was overnight and I would definitely NOT do this again.

On the LAX-JFK routing, however, I was on one of the newer, 3-class AA planes with a lie-flat seat in Business Class, and that was absolutely wonderful and allowed me to catch up on some lost sleep. Fewer Tier Points, admittedly, but infinitely more comfortable.
Thanks for this. Doing exactly same route end of 2015 and am dreading the HNL-LAX sector. Given that VX aren't launching SFO - HNL/OGG until November and December respectively I can't see AA making major changes to the equipment used on that route until 2016 at the earliest though.

Pigs have flown before though and I may be proven wrong...

Good find. Fare code is "IJDKP1PE" - tickets must be issued between April 6th and April 12th (6 day sale rather than the usual 5?). Cancellation for 300USD; changes 500 USD; min 5 days, max 3 months.

There is also a CX sale fare still active for CPH-BKK return over the summer (I booked this last week - I will be in Denmark anyway this summer and need to make a trip back to somewhere in SE Asia) for around 1000 GBP with all taxes (640 TPs so 1.56 GBP/TP).

Key points for the CX fare:
(1) Outbound and Inbound must be on M-Tu-W-Th
(2) 3000 DKK cancellation fee
(3) 1500 DKK change fee (+ reprice)
(4) 5 day advance purchase
(5) no minimum stay / 6 month maximum stay
(6) blackout dates : 10 Apr 15 to 10 May 15
(7) validity 27 Mar 15 to 15 Dec 15
(8) offer valid until 19 Apr 15

As noted, more competition might help.
The JFK-PHX flight was completely full in First (including 10 members of one family all travelling together, with several young children who kept running up and down the aisle!). I was lucky on the PHX-HNL leg and had an empty seat next to me, but I think that was the only spare seat. HNL-LAX was again full and I didn't notice any empty seats.

My JFK-LCY flight (BA4) on Easter Sunday, on the other hand, was a complete contrast and there were only five of us on the plane so it felt like a private jet! I used 1B to sit in for take-off and then retired to 1A for the night. If only all flying experiences could be as comfortable and quiet.

AA and US domestic flights in my experience are always full in the first cabin. I think I have only ever had one flight which was an overnight AA LAS-MIA which wasn't full.

Indeed - given one of the main benefits in US programmes is upgrades (as opposed to lounge access) they pretty much always run full. Be very wary of row 1 on the HNL flights - I almost got caught out and with the bulkhead in front of you there's less legroom than in a BA economy seat given the inability to stretch your legs out!

I am 5'6" and I usually choose the bulkhead on AA/US 757/737 so it does work ok for short people.

I am 5'2" and love the bulkhead seat on those planes. I just put my backpack against the bulkhead wall as an ottoman and stretch my legs out

I had a 757 on MIA/JFK and sat at the bulkhead. Didn't find it too bad, although this was a shorter flight and didn't try to sleep. Would say that the aisle seat is fine as the bulkhead does not stretch out fully so more legroom. Saying that, I a
So found the A321T almost had too much room... Could hardly reach teh footstool when sat up, and I am over six feet.

Although still had the position flight with FR fresh in my mind so anything else would be better.

Interesting to read the different views. I can't remember which bird it was but I was on PHX-HNL and I don't think I could have coped with row 1 - thankfully a honeymoon couple who had been seated separately were only too happy to swap so they could sit together and I could relax in row 2 instead! I'm 6ft, so not overly tall, but see pic of what the legroom was like (this was me just sitting normally in the seat)...

Based on my similar experience, I was pleasantly surprised that earlier this week, the "real F" cabin on the three class LAX-JFK was only half full, even when the two earlier flights on that day had been cancelled weeks in advance.

There are no systematic upgrades to this cabin

Not sure about the rules on using SWU stickers either.

SWU's (System Wide Upgrades aka eVIP's) and stickers are quite different instruments.

The former is the facility given at EXP qualification when 8 are awarded which are good for a 1 cabin upgrade up to 3x same directional segments across AA's network. They can certainly be used to upgrade from Y to J (C bucket) or J to F (A bucket) on the A321. It's also possible to upgrade with miles/co-pay.

Stickers (you used to actually get paper stickers but they're long gone) are accumulated by elites relative to miles flown and can be used on single AA domestic segments. As an exception to the general rule, I keep reading that they can't be used to upgrade from J to F on these 3 class transcons which, as I think you suggest, probably accounts for the comparatively high number of empty seats in those F cabins.
