Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

As Lefly already pointed out, once you construct an itinerary you like on matrix, there are a few ways to book it. A lot of people here prefer to just phone BA and give them the exact flight information, booking classes and fare code they are aiming for. Alternatively, you can try booking it on aa.com, using "search by schedule" feature. Don't forget to tick the box which allows it to include all OW flights in the itinerary, not just AA.

August is a good time for traveling as most of it falls into one of BA/OW low-fare windows. Currently both babybus (CW service between LCY and JGK) and domestic flights in US in domestic First on two-class flights over 2000 miles bring 210 TP per segment. All this is expected to change after April 28th, but as long as you book before then you can travel in August and still get the "old" TPs. A simpler trip like

DUB-LCY-JFK-LAS/PHX/SEA-JFK-LCY-DUB

will give you (40+210+210)*2=920 TPs. If 1000 is all you need, it's probably does not make too much sense to continue to Hawaii, as you will hit the target if you just tack on another two segments in First (at 60 TPs each). So, something like:

DUB-LCY-JFK-LAS-LAX-LAS-JFK-LCY-DUB

You need to be a bit careful while booking, you don't want to book US domestic sectors as BA codeshare flight numbers, as those will book as business and will result in reduced TPs.

You can check TPs for any sector using the TP calculator:

https://www.britishairways.com/trave...club/_gf/en_gb

Note that you need to log in to your BAEC account at ba.com, otherwise the calculator does not work.

HTH.

Evening all,

So having done some calculations im short of Gold by 420 points. My run out date isnt untill Jan next year however with the change in rules by BA being enforced end of next month id like to get a TP run booked before the change.

Has any one got any great ideas or tips to help push into Gold for the first time - im free most weekends although for a good trip would be happy to take a fri or mo as leave from work.

Thanks in advance,

Hi longhaullarry,

Where are you based as this will help tailor our advice ie UK, EU, USA etc

420 probably means 1 longhaul destination with a creative routing ex UK or ex EU or 2 transcontinental flights in the US in F. ( over 2000 miles)

Regards

The changes only have a big impact if you're planning on UUA or aren't already a Gold. If you're just doing a simple J TP run then it may be better to wait for a sale?

This is exactly what I am seeing on my itinerary - probably related to the internal workings of ticket issuing and should not cause concern since the operating (and marketing) carriers have the itinerary correct.

Thats sounds great SadKingBilly but I do not know which flight codes and classes to ask for - this is real teacher pupil stuff here. I want to make sure i get it right. Also what is the longest you can stay in anyone destination?

Thanks again

Are any of these TP runs available more or less immediately - in the next month or so?

The client I was working for have unhelpfully decided to put the project back a month... so it's likely I'll be twiddling my thumbs for a while. I have a grand total of 80 TPs, and would like to get up to Silver so I can enjoy lounge access on my regular MAN-HEL flights.

Starting anywhere EU - closer to MAN the better

The flight numbers, booking classes and fare codes are displayed on matrix. Try entering the following there:

From: dub :: ba lcy ba1,ba3 jfk aa,us las aa,us
To: lax :: aa,us las aa,us jfk ba2,ba4 lcy

The part after :: are advanced routing codes, which specify which intermediate points, carriers or flights to use for particular segments. Choose "see calendar of lowest fares" with date set to 1st of August, uncheck "Allow airport changes" and set cabin to "Business class or higher". Currently I see some dates on which this trip can be booked for EUR 1892, for example:

Here you can see flight numbers under every segment ("British Airways 1", "American Airlines Inc. 45", etc), the booking classes on the right ("Business (I)", "First (A)"), etc and if you scroll down, you will also see the fare codes for outbound and inbound legs ("ILR28AP" in both cases for this one) with a link to complete fare rules. That's the information you need to give to the agent on the phone to be able to book this successfully.

As for staying, the fares like that are usually pretty restrictive and do not allow stopovers at the intermediate points, so at most you will be able to spend 24 hours at any point other than the destination. Note that the itinerary already has a few overnight stays, for complex trips like that they are pretty much unavoidable. Matrix usually offers a quite a few options though, so you can choose the one you like the most, and the "time bars" display may be useful for that.

A variant of what's been previously posted, but via PHX for slightly more (but 300 TP more, so less per TP).

OK, I have found the exact itinerary I want on ITA matrix but cannot get the BA or AA website to show it. (It's not really a cheap TP run, just a decent ex-EU fare that fits my exact travel needs).

Now, this shows the AA sectors (MIA-TPA-MIA) as booking into A class which will be full TP's, am I correct assuming if I book thru BA with BA codeshare flight numbers I won't get the full TP's, and is there any way for BA to force the booking with AA flight numbers?

I know I could book thru AA probably and get full TP's but I wanna upgrade one of the transatlantic legs so this isn't an option.

As BA website won't show these flights an an option, what's my best bet, call them directly?

Correct, BA codeshares would only get 40 TPs for these flights, whereas booking under the AA flight number in A class gets 60 TPs. You won't get the AA flight number and A class to show on ba.com, it will default to the BA codeshare.

No way to force ba.com, but you can get AA flight numbers if you call.

Calling BA is your only bet on this one!

The BA website does not support this.

Yes. This should be no problem. Ensure the correct booking codes are used.

Alternatively you might rely on the kindness of strangers ... our resident ticketing wizard might help you set up the PNR.

Good point, I forgot about dutch_122. You would still need to call to pay RedDevil83, but dutch_122 can set up the booking in the BA system.
