No smoking on the First/Concorde lounge terrace?

Isn't there an outdoor balcony thingy in the T5 First lounge? If so, is it non smoking?

Yes, and yes, fortunately/unfortunately depending on your postion.

A much needed/earned fag can only be enjoyed outside the terminal.

No smoking inside the airport, period.

There are no open balconies that I'm aware of in T5

Yes, because it is still an enclosed space, as the main terminal roof is overhead.

The 'outside' balcony is actually inside... And I am sure that there is NO SMOKING in the whole of T5. ^ unless you are a smoker, in which case

T5 is a Non Smoking building and this Terrace is actually inside the building.

If you are on connection your only chance to smoke is to ask on a customer service desk to escort you outside. In order to do that you should have a connection time >3 hours and the BAA agent that will escort you will do that once per hour.

If your staying in the UK I am afraid you will find that all public buildings are non-smoking. You will have to stand outside in the rain and endure the glares of passers by. No outdoors terraces in T5. Just outside the building before you go through security.

No need to stand in the rain if you are BAA staff at T5, you can stand just by the exterior lifts next to the entrance doors, (which is a covered area and has no smoking signs all over it), and huddle together in a group of 6 to 10, all tabbing away. Yuck.

The whole of airside at LHR is non-smoking, as well as all indoor landside areas and most areas by doors etc.

Staff not complying with the rules do risk having their ID card (ie. their job) taken away.

It's become a farewell to the UK ritual for me.

I have occasionally had a tug on my e-cigarette on the CR balcony. No smoke, only vapour. And not as lovely as the real thing. But it's the best you can do.

I bought some nicotine chewing gum for the first time before a flight to DXB earlier this year.

I'm normally mr grumpy crawling up the walls for a ciggy on flights but with the gum things were much more relaxed.

A word of warning if you haven't had one before, go for the weaker ones and don't eat a whole one whatever you do!

I found that just nibbling on one every hour or so worked great and really made the cravings go away.

If I actually wanted to give up smoking I think these would be the way to go.

I go with the 21mg patches for flights. They don't stop me wanting a fag but they do stop me wanting to kill again.

What's torture when you find yourself high up above Hudson Bay is when the movie you're watching is full of people puffing away. Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire are also best avoided in flight.

.

When I smoked I used to use the lozengers on minitabs as they gave a more immediate 'hit'. As you say, at least the other passengers were safer that way.

I am on patches as well; still I get quite close to collapsing when lovely FAs pass along with their duty free troley ("Would you like a tube; they are only 30 quid, Sir").
Grrrrrr....
