And quite rightly they will be treated as criminals, because they are!

What a crazy world..................smoking tobacco is a criminal offence, yet cannabis possession has been decriminalised.

I'm so glad I managed to kick the nicotine habit but I really do sympathise for people who haven't yet been able to!

I've done this many times.

You will go to the BA customer service desk and you will say that you want to go landside.

They will write your name on a list , they will check your BP and they will tell you to come back when a BAA agent will be there to escort you landside.

The BAA agent will guide you downstairs and will leave you on the immigration Q.

No-one will ask you why.

You just have to make sure that you have enough time.

This is the way that works at T5.

Edit to add that BAA agents will escort you to the immigration Q, scheduled every hour.

Correct me if I am wrong but is it not the case that BAA staff will NOT normally escort a passenger unless this is requested by the airline?

Not in the UK it hasn't - you can still be fined and get a criminal record.

And as someone who has a disabled parent, it infuriates me that smokers use the disabled toilet to break the law. Some people in the UK really couldn't give a stuff about those less fortunate than themselves.

The Japanese seem to be the worst for smoking in no smoking areas. I've spotted them a few times at airports around the world puffing away where they weren't allowed to. One even had a fold away ashtray which he carried in his pocket.

Probably the registration that the BA customer service desk does, is a request.

Interesting. I had been told the opposite by BA staff at T5 when a delay of well over an hour was announced for my flight and I wanted to go back landside for a smoke. Like bealine, I am now a reformed man in this respect so no longer face that issue.

IIRC they never asked me.

If I am wrong and they did it, then the reason that I gave was about smoking. That's 100% sure.

At LGW, one time I had a 10 layover which I couldn't go landside. (At least, that was the answer that the Lounge agent gave me).

Maybe she liked you so much she didn't want you to leave.

I think she told you a porkie.

We don't have the staff to spare to take anyone landside for a cigarette at LGW. However, there's nothing to stop you clearing Immigration and making your own way out. But you need to do this before going through flight connections and to the lounge.

Are we now going to get complaints because there are delays on check in, boarding, etc because the staff are all escorting smokers outside. I really do despair.

It was my worst layover ever!

I arrived from Grenada with sunburns and went landside to smoke. I had a cigarette and a coffee.

Then I thought that I am ok and I could go to the lounge, guess what

From the moment that I cleared security, I wanted to smoke...

The lounge agent liked me and she gave me 2A (Not an upgrade) when she saw that was available and she let me play at the Playstation

Yes I do understand that, at LHR in order to let you go landside they want 3 hours from the moment you ask, and obviously you have to go through security 30 minutes before.

At LHR is something normal and scheduled (every hour), every time I use it I am on a group of 7-8 people.

That's fair enough.

In the potakas case he knew how long his layover would be so could have gone landside and spent a nice day in Crawley puffing away instead of staying airside for 10 hours chatting up the lounge staff.
