I used to live in a building with an elevator that had two flaws...
The first, which was quite annoying was that I'd call the elevator to my floor (2) and the arrow in the elevator would indicate that it would be going down but when I'd press "Lobby" it would ascend to a higher floor because someone else had called it. Very annoying.

The second flaw was a delicious one though. When the above would happen and I'd be forcibly sent skyward, (well, perhaps to floor 8) I learned that if I held the "doors close" button the elevator would stop on 8 but then immediately descend without opening the doors on 8.

If you don't think this evil, you might think otherwise as when the elevator reached its apogee and began its descent I would let out a loud "Muwahahaha!!!!" laugh.

They do work, I use them all the time to open and close doors and to test your theory I just walked out the lounge now to try it

Open doors = opens them as they close an Close doors does what it says

The ones is the Hilton Basel certainly DO work. Those lifts always stop at the ground floor, whether you want them to or not. Keeping a finger on the 'close' button reduces the delay considerably, which if you are in your swimming trunks and a dressing gown on a frigid Swiss day can be a life-saver.

Americans love to hold lift (elevator) doors open for inordinate periods. I have observed that lift behaviour is one of the fundamental differences between Brits and Americans. Americans scowl and press the 'door open' button when they see someone approaching; Brits smile, press the 'door close' button and may even mouth the word "Sorry".

According to the internet, on some lifts, holding the 'door close' button at the same time as a floor button for a few seconds puts the lift into express mode, and skips any other floors that might have people waiting.
(My girlfriend claims this is true, and was the case in a building she used to work in.)
