There are escalators but the crew all take the lifts so I assume that they are quicker.

When in doubt, follow the crew.

Yep there are but apparenlty the ones in T5 are the longest in the world..... Any way they take about 2 days to get up or down especially if people block them.

If you're first off the plane, you will often fine that you'll get to th lift quickly but then if there is a steady flow of people towards the lift you get... "doors closing" "doors opening" until the lift is full, on occasions I have pressed the lift close doors to try and get the thing moving... am I evil?!
The truth is the close button in elevators don't work checkout this article http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/insiden...e-part-ii.html

and Google the term "elevator close button" you will get all the information you need.

I do it with the lifts that descend from T5A to the HEX platforms. Unless there is someone attractive walking up to the lift, of course.

It's on the internet, so it must be true. Really?

If only that were true. Golden rule of T5 is that the lifts are often quicker.

My empirical observations are that

- T5B -> train is better by elevator.
- Train -> arrivals is better by escalator.
- T5A -> Train -> T5B departures is better by elevator, but there's surprisingly little in it.
- Elevators should be used for everything landside except arrivals -> departures.
- Escalators are better for the lounge shuffle
- Escalators are better at the gate, including the bus gates.

Yes, in terms of which floors they stop at and in which order, but all lifts (AFAIK) have door open/close buttons to let the user manually delay or accelerate departure.
