As of 2/12/14: We've had quite a few "Hey, come use this AWD. It's great" type of posts. When the AWD doesn't give a good discount, but is only posted to try to get renters to use the AWD of someone so the poster can earn free days from their Avis Corporate account. From here out, please put the company/trade group/etc that's associated with the AWD or we'll delete the post to keep it on-topic here.

Must use an AMEX card to pay, and you will receive 5% off the lowest prepaid rate. Couple this with the MUWA028 $35 off a week coupon and in many cases, you've got a good deal. (especially for vehicles not typically discounted much in most AWD rates)

https://www.avis.com/car-rental/profile/go.ac?S692200

Valid for rentals picked up between 10/23/2013 - 12/31/2013.

$25 cancellation fee and $100 no-show fee. If your flight gets delayed or cancelled, call reservations and they will waive the fees.
This (AWD S692200) is giving me the best rate I've found on a month rental from Philadelphia Airport (combined with Coupon Code MUWA073 which gives $50 off a monthly rental).

I'm seeing:

$371 base / $406 all-in for a Compact (Ford Focus etc)
$386 / $426 Intermediate (Chevy Cruz)
$400 / $442 Standard (Nissan Altima Coupe)

So first of all, THANKS. Second of all, a couple of questions:

- I'll actually be taking the car for 29 days + 4 hours, but when I book those times I get higher rates (presumably because it doesn't cross the 30-day line). Is it OK to just book the car for 30 days and then return it 20 hours "early", or will they actually charge me the higher rate to return it early?

- I'm not likely to do any better than that, am I?

- Any advice on those car classes? I normally just choose the cheapest smallest car, but for a whole month I'm willing to consider paying $20 or $36 extra for something better (though the gas mileage would make it more than that - website claims Ford Focus gets 48MPG highway?!). If any of those cars definitely has an aux jack to plug in my phone/iPod, that might make the difference for me.

thanks for saving me money!

Can you elaborate on what happened after you were 'refused'?

Did you take the car from Avis, but at a higher rate / use a back-up rez with another company / go elsewhere?

It seems this happens rarely so any further info appreciated.

Can anyone help me out with a 4WD SUV rental for Alberta, late-December - 5 days total?

The best I can come up with is J626300/D005297 which comes to $280 but the protection coverages and surcharges are killer... they bring it up to almost $580 total!

I'd really like to not spent more than $350 on this rental if possible. Are there any coupon codes that I could pair with this to knock the rate down, or perhaps a better code is available for Canada?

My dates are 12/19-12/23 and a larger 4WD vehicle is necessary as I'll be taking it through the Rockies.

As far as I can tell, the Lockheed code does not include LDW. Yeah?

Is Avis my best bet for an SUV rental or should I look to Priceline bidding or some other rental service? Avis seems to offer better rates than Hertz or Budget from what I can tell. Unfortunately there are not many CAD codes posted in this thread.

Also is it a safe bet than any of the rental companies operating out of Calgary in mid winter will offer vehicles that come equipped with snow tires and 4wd on SUV class as a standard?

Can you teach me how to tell? I didn't think it had LDW because I didn't see any mention of it when I tried to reserve with it on the Avis website.

Be careful here: if you're in an accident on an AWD (that you're not eligible for) that includes insurance, it's likely they will request proof of your eligibility for that code. So it might be included, but only for employees who qualify to use that code...

That's why I was hoping it didn't have LWD

Avis makes it hard to tell if a code includes LWD because even if it does, it still gives you the option to buy LWD at the regular price (I found this out by trying a code known to include LWD). It also doesn't explicitly indicate what's included in the rental summary page (after you pick a car and it's showing you the price) like National does. Or maybe I wasn't looking in the right place.

I was able to get it for $315.80 including taxes. I've pm'd you the details.

Let me share my experience using this code. Did not use Amex (used explorer to get primary coverage). Also noticed that for a 20 day rental it added about $2o when I added a frequent flyer number. CPM for that just doesn't work out so decided to book without the ff number in the profile.

It will give you the option to purchase LDW, however it will not charge you for it nor except it. Some company's are unable to purchase LDW or coverage period based on their negotiated terms with Avis.

The "frequent traveler surcharge" or whatever they call it, depends on which program you choose to collect miles/points with. Some, like DL are something like .60 for a week and others like Club Carlson can be way more. Most of the foreign FF programs aren't charged the fee. Just play around and see which one of your programs make the most sense per point/mile.
