I am not preferred. The agent at the checkout asked me.

That makes sense. As Preferred, the only Avis person you see is after you are in the car driving to exit... the exit gate DL checker. And he doesn't care about your AWD.

Does the same hold true for pay it now? Would you be better off to just pay it now and not deal with the checkout agent?

Unless you are Preferred, I would think that you still have to visit the rental counter. Not sure whether it would help you avoid any scrutiny.

You bypass the counter, walk to your car, show your DL at the gate and drive off.
