Btw, I think you are confusing the airlines with the car rental companies. The airlines got almost $50B in stimulus packages. Do you know how much the car rental companies got? Zero (other than PPP/SBA loans that all businesses could apply for).

Hello all, I will be traveling to Barcelona from Miami and need to rent a car for three weeks. Normally, I use the AAA South code for Hertz and it is giving me good rates (like 350-450 for three weeks rental) but not this time. I do have a code that knocks the cost by 60% with AVIS and I have used it recently to a trip to Providence airport PVD and no questions asked. How tight are they at the BCN Barcelona airport? I can also get to other airports like CDG (Paris) or LYS (Lyon) etc. in France. Fare is about the same but MIA-BCN is the cheapest nearly all the time. If there is a risk free code, I will take it. Thanks!

Gravis856 Jun 30, 2021 5:04 pm

I just used a company AWD code in BOS that was a “grey” argument at best if my company ID were checked, but nothing when I went up to to the preferred desk. Maybe since it was 10PM and they just didn’t care had something to do with it. Avis did send around 8 emails prior to arrival with strong language though.

I’m thankful it played out that way, since the cheapest code I DO qualify for on my backup, Hertz, was more than twice the price.

Cheapest AWD + Discount Coupon for Calgary Airport

Hi guys, I am sorry if this is an unreasonable request. I have an upcoming rental booking of 4 days (Thursday to Monday) at Calgary airport and wanted to know if anyone can help me with the best AWD + Discount Code. I have tried several combinations from codes here and for whatever reason the prices are seems to be very high. Sorry for the trouble guys.

NDtraveler Jul 7, 2021 9:52 am

I had a friend who got the same e-mail about having to show his ID for using a code. He had his business card ready and never got asked about it.

A few questions
1) has anyone actually been asked to show their business card etc? From this thread it seems a nobody small percentage have
2) Does anyone have specific experience about not being covered by insurance when using a code? What I am seeing is a lot doom and gloom with nothing to back it up.

david.anto7 Jul 8, 2021 9:18 am

I have an upcoming rental at a counter only location. So in case they ask for ID and I deny having one, then can I cancel there right away or is there a chance I get hit with any no-show fees for not picking up the reservation?

Update: Got asked for ID for the code. I had none, so canceled reservation and walked out. I did try to talk through it but the agent said it is a company wide policy since March of this year to check IDs for corporate codes. Agent also said you could avoid it at airport locations since they allow you to bypass the counter but at locations like their's they have to verify and confirm that ID has been checked before approving the reservation rate.

Anyone familiar with # D488900 ? Can't seem to find anything on google, but I'm pretty certain it was added to my Avis account through my employer. It doesn't add any coverage as far as I can tell, but does offer a discount on some coverage and extras. The reason I'm curious is it's giving me an incredible discount on both one-ways and round-trip although one-ways seem to have a milage fee of .30/mile. I plan to use it for a personal one-day one-way rental, so I thought I'd double check here just to see if anyone has info on it.

I also saw an earlier post about D468800. I believe this is one of the default Avis codes, although it could have also been added by my employer, as it's always popped up on my account. It doesn't provide much of a discount.

ckcatflyertalk Jul 13, 2021 11:09 pm

Avis is asking me for a "Rate Code" to go with D488900 or remove the AWD. Any idea?

uxela Jul 14, 2021 5:09 am

What code do you suggest for an European booking?
Will be picking up at airport with Presiden't Club so I doubt checking validity would be a problem.

psalz1 Jul 14, 2021 11:09 am

I ended up getting an email saying I'd need ID to use D488900. I called up my local branch, and they let me know this code was for emergency response travel only, and certainly not personal use. I've taken it off my reservation. Too good to be true, I guess!

Interesting as all my research said differently. Oh well.

It's used at FBO locations when flying in via private plane and requesting a rental from Avis. Is it not intended for public use.

No, not as far as we know. There are limited Avis coupons right now and they are all $-off coupons with a price threshold and/or minimum number of days.

I think I've seen the coupons giving something like $15 off $175 etc. Is there a coupon that gives money off a 3 or 4 day rental regardless of cost?

M B Jul 26, 2021 9:24 am

This is just an FYI post. I am Avis preferred and booked a intermediate rental at Calgary airport for 4 days and used the upgrade coupon UUWA036. Guess what, I was given a brand new 2021 BMW 330i with 120 kms on the odometer lol. I had an amazing time in Banff with the Bimmer.

AWD: D008400 Rate Code: R9

I see other people saying they received an email about this code after using it. Was looking to see what people's experience was with it, it dropped my rental rate for a week on a Toyota camry significantly.

I've seen its an Amazon leisure code.

AWD: D008400
Rate Code: R9

this is an airport pickup, avis preferred.

I didn't receive an email about it.

chris_grr Jul 28, 2021 10:33 am

Anyone have any recommendations on a good one-way code? I am doing MCO-GRR, I can either get ~$800 with unlimited mileage using Costco Travel, or ~$200 plus 31 cents/mile using A074800

I guess you can't wait to do ex-MCO until a future year when the FL driveout may return?

This is actually a Jan 2022 rental. I guess I need to just keep checking.
At these prices i'd rather buy a used Avis car in Florida and sell it for more in Michigan. I was just playing around today with numbers and I was getting some quotes from Carmax that were about equal or higher than the cost of the Avis used cars in Florida.

For an $800 rental, you'd rather go through the hassle of buying/insuring/registering/paying tax on a car, then re-selling it? Even under today's circumstances, I think it'd be hard to guarantee you'd be able to break even on that, let alone make a profit.

Even importing cars into MI, you can make money? Wow, they used to build them there...

Yeah its more of a theoretical exercise. I will be in the market for at least one new car in the next year or so, and buying a rust-free Florida car is definitely an option for us. I am sure by January the used car market will be different than it is now anyways so flipping cars for profit is probably not a sustainable enterprise.

Yeah but in 3 years in the Midwest, they turn to rust. ;)

To use Avis Select and Go you need 3 things:
.
  • Be enrolled at an Avis Preferred member (sounds like you're good there)
  • Rent from one of the 50 airport locations in the US/CA that supports the service
  • Reserve an intermediate car or better
Avis will typically assign you a vehicle, but you can use their app to select an alternate. Some locations have a Select & Go area where you can grab anything from there, but the service overall (both app choices and physical S&G section) at most locations is very meh and pales in comparison to both National Emerald Aisle (the best) and Hertz Ultimate Choice (not as good as National but still far better than Avis in most cases).

Just an FYI, because there has been shortage of cars across most rental companies/locations the select and go may or may not be available. The reason I mention this because last week I had to pick up a car at Calgary which had select and go, but the app was not letting me do that. Kept giving me an error that there are no cars available. I had to go to the counter and when I asked the agent he said that there were not enough cars to allow preferred (preferred plus in my case) to select any car they want. This could be a possibility across locations.

Thanks, AutoSlash and MB. And I will just happen to pickup the car at YYC!!!! So I assume YYC is one of the Select&Go locations. My rental will be in October and I selected standard SUV to go up and down the mountains with ease. MB, did you use a corp AWD and did they verify ID? My first time using a corp AWD at YYC so I need some data points. Thank you.

In my case, They did not verify my ID. YMMV. Hopefully in October, the car shortages are sorted out.

May I ask what corp AWD you used? Also how do I activate this Select&Go -- is there a checkbox from the app or the website? Or something else? Drawing a blank at my first time doing this.

SudOvest Jul 30, 2021 8:56 am

Is it possible to remove deloitte collision coverage after the rental has started? I had one rental earlier this month and they allowed me to remove the coverage-it was a small location and it was a paper contract. I prefer using my Chase sapphire insurance. I just picked up a car yesterday at an airport and the contract was digital and I was told I couldn't remove the included Deloitte coverage, but I was able to do so earlier this month on the paper contract by just putting an x on refuse even though there was a prefilled x on accept. Any advice?

Any experience / data points at YQB airport? If they verify ID. Thank you.

Avis Fail

Hi all,

I used the code B270XXX to rent a car in Spain. When making the reservation, I was very surprised by the very low price, and the Avis website showed that the amount to pay in case of damage or stealing was 0€.

At the counter, everything was great, no questions about the AWD, until I see that the rate did not include any insurance at all! On the contract, it is written that I was fully responsible for…72,580€…the entire value of the car ! I asked for the price of the insurance, and it was more than 120€/day!

So be aware, B270XXX does not work in Spain…
