Ok, booked J-class & got a J-class (pickup from Marriott Marble Arch), they claim that no upgrades even for President cos they only get cars delivered from somewhere else on demand.
Got a bog standard Passat S 2.0TDI DSG, no options at all. Someone returned an Audi A4 before me which is also classified as a J. Guess next time I should pickup from airport or somewhere with more cars.

K > N upgrade at LHR yesterday, received a Mercedes E200CDi automatic. Somewhat daunting barge to drive through the seemingly teeny LHR check-out tunnel

Updated thanks. Group D is all or nothing: an MG or a 1 Series

I think it's important to note that with both the above cars (as well as the 5 series) the new and latest models are most definitely not guaranteed as they still have the old models on the fleet as well.

Quick weekend rental from Belfast Int'l (BFS). 2012 model Mercedes Benz C180. Not exactly dripping in kit (no sat nav in either the C class or E class Mercs I've rented from Avis) but decent enough.

Looking around the BFS parking lot there were a tonne of Peugeots - mostly 508 (group F), 508SW (groups H & J) and 5008 (group L). No sign of anything other than Merc C180 and E200 in groups K and N respectively.

As noted in the OP, the Fiat 500 is very much in abundance in Northern Ireland, although none of the locations there offer Select Series, so it looks like a very achievable premium model in group A. ^

I reserved group F at MAN and received a white BMW 320d. No sat nav and while the USB charged up my iPhone, it would not play back the music. Still a very nice car which appeared to get pretty good mileage.

Only car they actually gurentee Sat-Nav in is the Scirocco, although I've had it in two out of my last three A4 rentals from LHR.

It seemed pretty new. About 2000 miles on the odometer. But I don't know the year. I had it for 4 days.

For foreign visitors, UK registration plates carry the car's year of first registration in the third and fourth digits, although it's encoded.

Cars registered 1 March – 31 August 2012 carry the registration XX12 XXX while cares registered 1 September 2012 – 28 February 2013 will carry the registration XX62 XXXX. 11 or 61 indicates a car registered in 2011/12, 10 or 60 indicates 2010/11.
