Yes, Let's meet. I will be at the Hilton in Puerto Madero but my husband and I can meet you somewhere, just let me know where. Lets do it sooner (around November 30) so you can give us some tips for our stay. I sent you a PM with my email...

replies to various queries

Folks, here is my take on a couple of questions that have been posted over the past few days:

1) BoBo Hotel: Ive not heard anything negative about this place, on the contrary, I continue to get very positive ratings from people that stay there, these are not locals that live here and go to the bar & restaurant, these are people that actually stay at this property.

2) Sucre: Its a cool place, but the food and service are unfortunatetly not consistent. Its a gamble.... if one is very keen about cool places and being part of the "scene", then this place is a must visit.

3) Colon. For best seats, go through Hotel Concierge or travel service... and be prepared to pay a service fee.

4) Casa Cruz: similar to Sucre... its very hot, yes... but the food & service is questionable. Go there for the scene, but if you going for the food, you may be left wishing for more.

Sorry for not checking out this thread more, but these have been a couple of very busy weeks.

Cheers
Alex

So went tonight to see a concert at the Colon. Well, perhaps not "see", but rather "hear". The only seats they had available around lunchtime today were the top upper left row - which don't actually have views of the stage. That'd be 6 or 7 levels up (depending on how you count). Either way, for the $4 pesos each we paid, it was a good way to see the inside of the Opera House - and the concert was good too.

As far as clothing/dress goes, here's the observations based on this evening. It's all about where your sitting:

Orchestra (floor): Suit/sport coat and/or shirt/tie for guys, some sort of dress or nice clothing for women.

Levels 1-3: Any form of nice shirt with pants (non-jean) for guys, and pretty much any biz casual for women

Levels 4-6+: Pair of Khakis and anything not a tee-shirt for guys, nice casual for women

Level 6+: This overlaps a bit, but pretty much any gender up here can wear any pair of nice jeans with some nice shirt and you'll be fine. The only people wearing suits/nice clothing are those with thier AARP cards or those who've never been to the Colon before (such as myself).

Anyways...hopes this helps!

ARGENTINA AIRLINES ON STRIKE!!! (Nov -25, 2005)

 Bad news - now the airlines are on strike and many flights to Argentina are getting canceled:

strike continues

Well, the strike continues. We are supposed to fly from BA to Iguazu on Tuesday but it looks like that wont´happen. Not good as our hotel is booked and we have to find somewhere else to stay. The good news is that if we are still here we may join you at the Hilton on Wednesday night.

If anyone knows of a reasonably priced hotel with vacancies from Nov 29 to Dec 1 please post. We would love it if we coould find an opening at a B&B in Palermo. We are in the microcentro area now and would like a change. Seems that there is very little availability anywhere.

Having a wonderful time in BsAs but would like to get to Iguazu!

Stranded passengers -come join us 11/30 6:30 pm

abqdeb,

So sorry to hear about your plans getting disrupted due to the airline strike-- hopefully it will be over as quickly as the Teatro Colon strike, but it would also be fun having you join the FT gathering at the Hilton front desk - 6:30 pm - Wednesday. We can comiserate with you. :(

I just escaped disaster too - my original LAN flight home got cancelled and they gave me a 17 hour layover in Lima, getting back to LAX 2 days later as a substitute. (!) That was not going to work, but the bad news is now I have to leave BsAs a day earlier to get the more direct flight instead.

So we'll drink to whatever - travel is always an adventure. Hope you make your flight ----- and I hope you can come Wednesday night.

How is the weather - any last minute tips before the rest of us leave?

sbagal,

Not sure if you´re already on your way here or not. Supposed to rain on Tuesday and partly cloudy other days. It was VERY hot here over the weekend, but supposedly cooling off some. People are definitely wearing summer clothes and sandals. No need for even a jacket a night. No change yet about the strike and still searching for somewhere to stay tomorrow. Your adventure in Lima sounds like fun!?

I hope we get to Iguazu.... but would like to meet everyone on Wednesday. Gaucho, can you come?

Safe flight!

Hotel searching in BsAs

Deb, do you have computer access - is there a Kinko's? - and do you know about the "TripAdvisor" website that reviews various hotels? Look up hotels in Buenos Aires and good luck. There are a number of lower priced hotels in the "Moon" guide for BsAs that I have not seen on other hotel lists - more for the budget traveler, but they seem at least clean and well-located.

I have seen good reviews for the River Hotel which is by the Congress building, a little more away from the central areas but it does look like everything is pretty accessible in this city.

Have you looked at the busses that go to interior places - apparently they have sleeping seats like first class planes - so it makes it easier to do long distance trips on land, if you can't fly.

Best wishes,

sbagal

There are internet cafes readily available throughout downtown Buenos Aires.

That's right. Sleepers for buses ... are rather popular in Argentina.

Aerolineas Strike will apparently continue through Tuesday, although negotiations are ongoing. Sorry for the bad news...

Gaucho, tell me true ---with these strikes and changes in travel plans for we tourists, are we now starting to experience the "real" Argentina?? ;)

If so, then let them happen - spontaneity and being flexible can often lead to unexpected delights.

Hope you can join us at the Hilton Thursday 6:30pm so we can all say thanks to you in person. Drinks are on us --- and we will share a glass of the RightSide wine.
