crazy idea...bringing wine *into* EZE?

We are going to be flying into EZE from JFK Dec 2014. We want to bring some "special" wine with us to share in our travels. 2 part question:

1-Duty free allowance is 2 liters pp - is this pooled for families (eg 4 liters for me & my spouse)? If not, we may track down some 500ml bottles ;)

2-if we bring in more than the allowance, how is duty payable (one expat site suggests this is rarely enforced) - total rate seems to be 20% duty, 6.38% excise and 21% VAT?

Don't worry, we are planning on buying & drinking plenty of vino in Argentina!

Thanks :)

Unless you bring a boat load of wine through EZE, there is pretty much Zero chance you will even get noticed. Trying to guess the type of wine in question.... if I had to wager I would say its wine of the Kosher sort.....?

Safe travels !!

Sounds like we'll choose from 4 or 5 bottles in a half-case shipper or 12 in a case shipper as checked luggage (somehow wine is all we ever check!). Not kosher, most likely a couple of special ready-to-drink (older) bordeaux or burgundies, and a couple of bottles from our closest winemaker friends.

Ah... well bringing older Bordeaux and Burgundy into Argentina is very smart, since whats going to be available here is going to be not only extremely expensive but also from all the wrong vintages.

Also, good call on bringing your own Styro shippers, those are also very hard to find and quite expensive here in Buenos Aires.

Im ITB here in EZE, so if there's anything wine related you may need, please feel free to email or PM me.

Cheers,
Alex / Gaucho100K

Per Gaucho100K's request when I was seeking advice for my tip to Buenos Aires, I wanted to share the links to my Trip Reports. I posted the flights here on Flyertalk but the full review with lots of photos can be found here. Also, I just added my food experiences to my blog which is 100% non-commercial and provides a look at traveling the globe with celiac disease and food allergies.

Thank you so much to this forum for all of your help in helping me make my visit to Buenos Aires truly remarkable. The City stole my heart and I am already looking forward to my return.

Cheers from EZE,

Warned you about BA stealing your heart, didn't I? It has that effect. Le sigh. I'm just counting the days on my calendar, like a schoolgirl waiting for summer vacation.

Wonderful TRs! The food report is terrific! I particularly loved seeing the dessert menu with the tocino del cielo and the isla flotante, traditional choices which bring back so many wonderful memories.

Hi there! I am planning a trip to BA for New Years 2015 - looking at spending a week, just the wife and I. Can someone recommend a few hotels to look at? I prefer luxury hotels (ones with the best service anyway) - but also want to make sure I'm in a good location for either fireworks, or experiencing the awesome city. We love art.

I agree with all of the above, and would add:

Sofitel Le Sud
Four Seasons Bs As

I just don't get the Love for the Sheraton Park Tower. The Park Hyatt is in a much nicer neighborhood and blows away the Sheraton any day in my book. I am not a fan of big hotels as you can see.. For the points user perhaps. But any trip report that I have read is consistent with my sentiment. Thanks and Safe Travels

I agree that the Park Tower is mostly for the SPG junkies... not that its bad, but the Park Hyatt and the Alvear are clearly a notch above.....

I certainly agree with this evaluation, but you have to bear in mind that while the Hyatt and Alvear may be a notch above the Park Tower in terms of quality, they are about five notches above in terms of price. Of course, with the mercado azul, I guess anyone who thinks in dollars can be liberal ...

Actually I have stayed at the Hyatt for 15,000 Gold Passport Points per night. If someone was redeeming points for a stay, its one heck of a bargain.

Keep an eye on the rates at the Hyatt as well, they have specials all the time.
