I certainly agree with this evaluation, but you have to bear in mind that while the Hyatt and Alvear may be a notch above the Park Tower in terms of quality, they are about five notches above in terms of price. Of course, with the mercado azul, I guess anyone who thinks in dollars can be liberal ...

Also true...... ^

First visit to BA

Hi all,

In October I will be in BA for 3 nights. I will arrive from Atlanta, GA at 8:20AM on friday the 17th.

I travel alone and looking for a hotel in the $150-$175 a night. Any recommendations on hotels? I'm going to use it as a base to explore BA. I'm doubting about Hotwire, but then I don't know where I end up.

Are there any tips for a solo traveller. What to see/eat/drink and what not to see/eat/drink? :D I am also very intrested in wine and bife de lomo. How typical :p

I suggest you check out rates at the large international chains and book a post paid rate. That way, if you bring down US$ Cash and trade it on the informal market you will get a relevant discount and may be able to get your room for the price range you are quoting. My first bet would be to look at the Sheraton Libertador, but also try the other SPG properties and others.

Please feel free to contact me directly for anything wine related.

Thanks,
Alex / Gaucho100K

Look, this kind of information is useful! ^^ Thanks Gaucho100K!!

But since it is my first visit Argentina, the question: Is the difference in the exchange rate between the formal and informal market so big? And how do I handle it when I'm there?

Anyway, I will look around to find a room the next few days

And about the wine. I will PM you, Gaucho100K

The difference is noteworthy to most people that visit, although this is a call for each person to make. The current official exchange rate is around 8.20 Pesos per Dollar, and an informal trade should yield you anything between 10 to 12 Pesos depending on how much you trade, where you transact, etc.

I suggest you check the various threads to find details on what your options are to exchange money. Just remember to bring $100 bills in very good condition, smaller notes and notes with evident signs of wear will either not be accepted or be marked down considerably.

1st Visit to BA

My husband and I will be traveling to Montevideo(MVD), Uruguay for 2 wks with a language immersion program in early Dec 2014. From MVD we want to go to the Iguazu Falls(IGR) for 2 nights then on to Buenos Aires for about 4 nights (dec 15-19) We leave on a late flight back to Santa Fe, NM on Dec 19. Now the questions:
1. Best way to get to Iguazu Falls from MVD? This is my biggest concern. Aerolinas Arg seems to be the only airline that flies there from MVD. The flight from MVD has layover at EZE before going on to Iguazu. Time being of the essence…should we ferry over to EZE to catch the flight? Concerned that the flight from MVD will be delayed or cancelled--then we are screwed. Or do these daily flights stay pretty much on time.(do i hear laughing?)

2. Once we arrive in BA I think I can figure out from all previous posts what to do. But I have noticed some reference to Argentina wine tasting. We won't have time to go to Mendoza (believe me it was a tough choice between Iguazu or Mendoza). Are there some wine tastings that can be arranged before arriving?

3. WEATHER: I know it is summer in Dec but should I expect much rain? Humidity? Heat? Do most hotel rooms have AC?

4. MONEY: well, I have been reading the thread for some definitive answers. I can read more for some answers as to whether to use credit cards or bring dollars. Or both. Perhaps there is a definitive post that someone could provide.

Thx so much in advance…

Does anyone know what the current price of the remises (in Pesos) is from EZE to Recoleta? A friend of mine is heading down in a couple of weeks and has lined up a cab for 50USD which I find crazy... I thought I paid about 200 pesos earlier in the year but cannot remember exactly.

Many thanks.

Aerolineas has improved its on time performance, so laughing mattes aside, they are probably OK to book.. not that you seem to have much options.... ;)

December should not get much rain, but it will be HOT and also HUMID. All proper hotel rooms will (of course) have AC.

On the issue of Wine Tasting, I can assist you... please PM or email me for details.

Thanks,
Alex / Gaucho100K

I think take USD. Much better exchange rate I gather. Not sure about counterfeit bills though, or way to exchange to get the best rate. Maybe someone who lives there can advise?

Buenos Aires to Santiago air-pay with ARS?

I have an open jaw between BA and SCL next month. I'd like to trade some USD on the blue market to buy my plane ticket when I get to BA?

Will this be possible?

This closed thread quoted should have had the title changed, and the last thread should have been clear that this is a myth in terms of interpreting the regulation. There is clearly NO restriction as to non-residents paying for travel in pesos, including domestic air tickets. In fact, the law here is that you must pay in pesos for domestic air tickets or anything else if you pay in cash.

The ferry companies get away with forcing dollar payments not because of this law, but because they are Uruguayan companies that can charge dollars if you are a foreigner (the transactions are registered as being done in Uruguay even if factually done in Arghentina)and there aint nutting you can do about it.

I have had lots of non-resident friends pay for domestic air tickets, tours, hotels , restaurants and everything else with Arg pesos over the last year, no problems amigosss .

But a non-resident still has to pay a much higher fare for domestic routes, right? How about international fares?

I had paid for Seacat tickets in pesos at their Sales Office in BsAs last year. Just went to the bankers window in the back and all was procesed very quickly.. Safe Travels
