General Information:

Please note this thread only currently applies to US-issued personal Platinum cards. There have been no official announcements of foreign-issued metal cards. It also applies to all co-branded personal Platinum cards such as Mercedes and Morgan Stanley.

All new and and replacement cards are now stainless steel, as of March 30, 2017.

Amex Press Release

This thread is for discussion of the physical metal card. Please see this thread for all other new Amex Platinum features:

USA: New personal Platinum benefits; Higher annual fee ($550)

Contactless

There are contactless (NFC) and non-contactless version of the Platinum Card.

If you previously had a contactless card and requested a replacement you will receive a contactless replacement.

If you previously had a non-contactless card and requested a replacement you will receive a non-contactless replacement unless you ask specifically for contactless.

Some reps do not know about contactless, HUCA or speak to a supervisor. If you are told you cannot request a contactless card because you requested another replacement within 10 days, ask to speak to fraud prevention and they will override this restriction.

When you apply for a new Platinum account you will be sent a non-contactless card by default.

The contactless and non-contactless cards are physically different. Detailed description and photos in Post 204.

Welcome Kit

Some members have received a Welcome Kit with a wooden display for the card that can be repurposed as a phone stand.

Pictures and description in Post 282.

All new cardmembers should receive the Welcome Kit whereas replacement cards generally seem to arrive in an envelope.

I have a contactless card, but online it showed me replace with a metal card which I submitted.

I should have it tomorrow (Mar 31) and will report if it is contactless or even metal :P

Same, just called AMEX via number on back of card.

Requested to speak with representative for "metal card."

Rep asked for 3 numbers on the back of card, and told me they would ship with arrival by next Monday. I've been doing fine with the old card for 5 years...don't see any reason why I needed to request for expedited shipping. All good here!

Same. I requested expedited as well just because I can for free.

I called into Amex on a different issue and the agent told me, without prompting, about the metal card and asked if I wanted it. He said he could overnight it, but due to high demand, it'll either ship out today or tomorrow. Not in a hurry to get it, but curious to see it.

Edit: Just got an email saying expected arrival 3/31/07

My card doesn't have contactless, but I didn't have the online option for requesting a metal card. I called in and the robot gave me that as one of the options, it's going to be sent regular mail, there didn't appear to be an option to ask for next day.

FYI-- Oddly, even though I specified USPS as the delivery method when making my request online (I'd rather have it put in my mailbox than left out by UPS or FedEx while I am at work), my method of shipment reflects:

Shipping Method
FEDEX Standard - PM Delivery

(Though with the non-expedited estimated delivery date of 4/4)

The metal option wasn't showing up online, so I tried secure chat. Turns out they can only send cards to the billing address. Gave the phone number a ring and was able to have my replacement metal card sent to my current location. It should arrive via FedEx on Monday.

I got the MBZ card last week. No option to get a replacement card until 10 days from issuance of the original. So it looks like I'll have to wait until 4/03 to request it. I still have the standard Platinum which I was able to get switched from the website (desktop version only).

Used the online chat to request my metal card, took maybe 1 minute total and just the standard verification questions. Shipping to my address on file via fedex with an estimated delivery of 03/31/17 (tomorrow).

Makes me wonder how they're stamping/printing these suckers out so quick. I requested mine around 11am pacific time today... but still, generating the card AND packaging for shipment to meet an air shipping overnight deadline that fast is pretty impressive... especially since the original card when I got approved took ~8 days to get to me >.<

Ordered my metal replacement via chat as well, but they noted that as of this evening, due to high demand, only FedEx Standard was available. Card will be here on or before 4 Apr.

This seems to be further evidence that Contactless will not be available on the metal cards.
From a physics / engineering standpoint, I don't believe the metal cards cannot be contactless. The contactless cards have loops of copper wire around the outer portion of the card which go to a chip on the card. I would imagine that the metal card insert would block the RF energy / signal from the reader. Perhaps it is possible to design something that would work, but I'm having trouble thinking up a design that would be thin enough and sturdy enough to still be a metal card AND contactless.
