For earlier discussion of the restriction's application to personal cards, see Put a fork in it 5.1.2014: One bonus per personal card per person "lifetime" [USA].

It is essential to read the terms of the specific offer, but in general:

This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.
  • You can only earn one new account bonus for each card issued by American Express in the USA. We do not know precisely how far back American Express looks to see if you have previously held the same card, but there is anecdotal evidence that the Customer Service database looks back only seven years. This means that if you cancelled a card in 2007 or earlier, and have not held it since, you will probably qualify for a new account bonus in 2015.
  • Holding a related card does not disqualify earning a new account bonus. Examples: Green, Gold, and Platinum are each separate products. Delta Gold, Platinum and Reserve are each separate products. The Hilton credit card is a different product than Hilton Surpass.
  • Holding a Supplementary Card (authorized user) on someone else's account does not disqualify you from earning a new acount bonus if you open the same card type in your own name.
  • As of mid-February 2016, Amex appears to be adding the same restriction to its business card products.
  • If you receive a targeted offer, online or through the USPS, for a card which you have previously held you may, or may not, actually receive the bonus. Be certain to save a copy of the offer, and to read and save every screen which appears during the application process.
  • Upgrade offers are different from new account offers. You may be offered a bonus to upgrade (for example) a Gold Card to a Platinum Card, and you may be eligible for that bonus even if you previously held a Platinum card. It is still essential to read and save the terms of the offer.

If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer.
  • This language appeared in the Spring of 2013, a year before the once-in-a lifetime policy was announced. The key term is "may", which gives American Express discretion to award or withhold the bonus.
  • To reduce the risk that the automated system will deny a new account bonus, RIGHT click the application link and open the application in a Private or Incognito browser window. American Express will still know that you are a current cardholder, but the system will not flag your application.

Points will be credited to your Membership Rewards account within 6 - 8 weeks after the spend requirement has been reached.
  • In practice it is not possible to know when American Express's system will credit a bonus to your rewards account. It may happen immediately after you meet the target spend, or it may happen when the next statement (or the following statement) is generated, or it may take the full eight weeks.

And it's only in once in a lifetime (actually 7ish years) per each type of Delta card.. So If you only had the regular Delta card before, you can still get the bonus on (a) the new Delta Blue card, and (b) the Delta business card. Plus, Amex MR points are transferrable to Delta, and there are quite a few Amex MR cards you can get if you haven't had them before.

But you have to study up in the Amex forum about all that to figure out what your next step(s) should be.

Try a AMEX SKYmile Business card.

It is only once in a lifetime if Amex decides so. I had an Amex Delta Gold in 2013, canceled when annual fee came around in 2014. Started receiving mailers for the Delta Platinum in early 2017, but ignored them. Eventually they relented and sent me an offer for the Delta Gold with 70K (50K+25K) bonus plus $50 on first Delta transaction, with no lifetime language. Applied, met the spend requirement in a single transaction, received the 70K miles with the first statement. Card is now in my sock drawer and will remain there until the anniversary, when I will call in to cancel.

There are Gold, Platinum, and Reserve cards. "Once per lifetime" is per product, so maybe you can get one that you haven't had and still earn some points.
You can also sign up for a regular Amex Membership Rewards card because Amex MR can be transferred to Delta at 1:1.

And sometimes even more when Amex has a promotion. 20-50% bonuses are not unheard of.

And that reminds me -- the Amex Offers to earn bonus Membership Rewards can be pretty great return on investment. I got 5,000 for renewing Amazon Prime, 1,000 for going to Shake Shack for lunch... I don't know if there is a similar deal for the Delta branded cards?

1. How much was the spend limit($2k) in 3 months?
2. What did you spend it on with one transaction?

It is possible to trick it if you mac e large single purchase like at Costco --- expensive TV then let charge post triggering the AMEX points.....then return TV within 90 days.

Current online AMEX DL GOLD
"Earn up to 60,000 Bonus Miles
Earn 50,000 Bonus Miles after you spend $2,000 in purchases with your new Card within the first 3 months and a $50 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase with your new Card within your first 3 months. Plus, earn an additional 10,000 bonus miles after you make an additional $1,000 in purchases within your first 6 months. Offer expires on 4/11/2018.†"

Delta has not offered a Membership Rewards transfer bonus since 2011.

Unlikely to work:

Amex USA terms now penalize:abuse,misuse,gaming;1st yr downgrade/close;leaked offers.

AMEX Platinum Sign Up Bonus Removed After Review

The seven years are calculated from the time you closed the account, not from when you opened it. If (example) you closed it in 2012 it has not yet been seven years. In any event, seven years not a published policy, it just seems to be the length of time that closed accounts remain in their application database.

Mia,
Got any good hints on AA Award travel to Europe?

AA merger with US Air was good for award travel from US to Europe for 1.5 years after merger but now is terrible.

AB(air Berlin) was a partner and canceled all four(4) of my OW flights on AA Award travel.
I tend to fly in to Germany or Prague which is now mostly BA partner which is high taxes.

AA flies the SEA-PHLMUC route so I occasionally use this on AA Award travel if the online system allows.
Many time only BA is available.

Thanks

It was $2k for 50K points and another $1k for an additional 20K points.

I paid part of my property taxes with it. Yes, there's a 2.1% convenience fee for that, which comes to about $63. But then I bought a $50 Delta gift card, which triggered the $50 bonus on first Delta purchase. So the net cost was really just $13, which isn't a bad return for 75K miles.

I wouldn't do that if I was you. Amex really hates it and they have been cracking down on such shenanigans.

blaze,

THANKS.

1. Contacted AMEX was advised I only have two cards Hilton Honors(opened in 2009 and active) and SPG(closed in 2017).
2. AMEX member since 2002 but no record what that was.
I know it was Delta Skymile card which I closed in 2009 and transferred to HH without a new credit check.

Thus AMEX and I assume I'm eligible for DL SKymile Gold Card which I'm going to get soon.

Heard that credit cards that a re business are not reporting spending limits to credit Bureaus as it affects the credit card utilization rate.

Mia,
THanks
AMEX says never heard of 7 year card (lifetime) limit. But suspect since my DL Skymile doesn't show your comment right be valid.
AMEX states that two different promotions can trigger card:
1. Offer from Delta which can waive even a 7 year limit
2. First time card holders

I think the 7 year limit has helped me when I transferred from DK SKY to HH card.

It sounds as if you converted the card, rather than closing it. American Express does seem to have trouble tracking product changes. For some purposes this account might still show as a Delta card, and as Hilton for others.

American Express issues Business cards based on your personal income and credit file, but does not report Business accounts to personal bureaus - unless you default.

If AMEX isn't reporting a business card to credit bureau does this affect your credit score in any way since no notification of open or close?

There may be an inquiry (hard pull) when they evaluate the application, but the creation of the account, balances etc are not reported.

I chatted with Amex CSR online about my cancelled cards, and the oldest record they have is January 2016. I cancelled my SPG Business card sometime in 2014. Is it safe to apply for it again?
