<Snip>

I will now, as of 12-31-11 cut up my addvantage mastercard and apply for a starwoods amex plat card. if i need a visa/mastercard i will use my united visa.

Is this a joke?

There is no Exec Gold Status... It is just AAdvantage Gold.

Why wait till 12-31-11? Your AA card charges stop counting towards LT status as of 12-01-11. And... it takes Citi 2 to 3 days to post charges, so anything charged after 11-27, may not be able to make it toward status anyway...

So why wait till 12-31-11 to cut up the card? :D

Unfortunately, UA has NEVER allowed credit card charges towards earning any status.

And... the low tiers just got royally shafted by UA's newly announced program change effective 2012 in case you are not kept abreast of what is going on...

Wow! Why is being a Million Miler important to you if you don't even fly?

Maybe there's a reason they're called frequent FLYER programs. Just a thought.

While your language suggests you are quite upset, I, for one, think that your boycott idea deserves consideration from our members.

I understand your anger, especially since you have spend years diverting much of your spending from other cards to your AA Mastercard. However, I don't think the backlash will be that severe. First, I would think the vast majority of cardholders don't spend remotely enough on their cards to come anywhere close to obtaining status based on purchases alone. It's more about the miles and getting free tickets (or whatever else they spend miles on). Second, while this hurts a person like you, in the aggregate it helps frequent fliers because if there are fewer people with status the likelihood on an upgrade is better. While the airlines make a ton of money selling miles to CC companies, the core business is aviation and the frequent flier is the customer who the airlines should prioritize. Finally, few airlines allow lifetime status mile accrual through card spending, so it is not surprising that AA would strive to do less for its customers (like all airlines do). Frankly, I'm surprised it took them this long to close that program, seeing how many churners were able to achieve lifetime status over the years.

BTW, do any readers have any ideas on cheap or easy ways to earn AA miles before December 1 since I am less than 100k short of the one million miles for lifetime Gold status? I won't be flying, staying at hotels or renting cars before then and I've already gotten bonus miles from credit cards? Thanks for any help you can share. My question reminds me of the awesome advice given by members 10 years ago when AA had its 20th anniversary offer of 20K miles if you used 20 partners within a certain time frame. I wound up buying a Mercedes (at a great price) because I used a free partner to get a price quote on a car.

Congrats AA on your change to make only flight miles count toward the million miler Exec Gold Status. Screw you AA...heres what you have done...I should have by the end of the year 630k lifetime miles all from charging and useing e-shopping mall. Now sense you are screwing us loyal cardholders and other addvantage members who still earn miles based on your promos thoughout your website...here comes what you deserve...I will no longer use my addvantage mastercard. i will no longer use aa's e-shopping mall or anyother promo that will not give me miles that count toward the lifetime reward. AA you, wrongly, assume that flight miles make you more than other income streams...well do the math again sweetheart! You do not! The cost of those companies purchasing addvantage miles from you is pure profit vs. the cost of doing business to give someone 10k miles on a round trip flight. Now clearly, on full fare tickets that is not the case...but most seats sold are at discounted fares. I hope, and strongly believe, the backlash will be wide felt and strong. You don't change a program with 90 days notice. AA should show some class and give members at least 1 year to try to complete the 1 million miles. AA should show some class and maybe could have soften the blow by starting a lifetime Exec Silver status for 500k. You dont screw your loyal base.

Now I know all you flyers here will disagree...BUT LET ME BE VERY CLEAR...if all us "non status" cardholders stopped using our creditcards and using or shopping for products from companies that pay AA tens of (if not 100s) of millions a year to buy addvantage miles to reward us...all you flyers would have no planes to fly in.

I will now, as of 12-31-11 cut up my addvantage mastercard and apply for a starwoods amex plat card. if i need a visa/mastercard i will use my united visa.

I hope this is what you wanted AA!!!

Can't help but think that if you were using the SPG Amex you would have been that much closer to AAMM... :p

You can check out this idea:

Miles might not post in time though

Seems to be over.

Mods might want to merge with the lengthy threads on the aa board re how to earn before 12/1. Not sure what to do with op though. Maybe that is miles buzzable.

Will they only convert 8 upgrades to 35k miles when those upgrades were given for million mile status or any 8 upgrades in your account?

It is a one off benefit for those that attained lifetime gold this year and have not used the upgrade credits which they received

@happy...no joke. I thought it was called exec gold. Isn't is called exec plat? Maybe that's what confused me. And thanks, I know you were being a s-a, I will check into what my dec statement cut off date is. And I picked UAL because I also have 700k miles from charging with them. I switched to AA a few years ago because of how any/all miles counted toward 1mm.

@mr mama...because I am sick of you flyers getting all the upgrades and for us having co-pays when I have more miles than most of you here.

It is not called Exec Gold. Lowly Gold (I am one, LT GLD) does not have the Exec associated with it.

It seems in all your anger, you totally miss the Cut Off Date.

It is NOT your statement cut off date ... Anything POSTED after Nov 30 would not go into the LT Status counting, but of course it is still going to be the Redeemable Miles, just not qualify for the Status.

And, this AA change has been long rumored for at least a year or even more. If you are keen at the Million Miler status, you would make some effort to read AA forum just to stay up todate, wouldn't you?

But as others point out, if you dont even fly, what is the meaning of MM to you?

And no, even the Plat does not get complementary upgrade!

Only Exec Plat gets the SWUs and they EARN it by flying 100K miles a year at the minimum.

You will NOT get a better treatment from UA just by charging your card... and you will get even angrier when you find out how UA handles the upgrade. I suggest you to study UA's new program rules effective 2012. So you would not have another anger attack just a few months down the road!

philemer Sep 24, 2011 9:27 pm

AA specific so moving to AA Forum.

Agreed. They should give you the upgrades (the well-written treatise makes that apparent) rather than, say Executive Platinums and such. Good lord, what are they thinking ?!?!?!

By the way- if you do cut up the card and carefully cut it so that the numbers and magnetic stripe are obliterated, you can actually recycle the plastic in many places ^

Cheers.
